Dodgeball Source ALpha 3 has been unleashed!

The development team of Dodgeball for the Source Engine would like to announce that the Dodgeball Alpha 3 release
has been made public! More progress has been made since the last release (Alpha 2) than we could possibly have anticipated.
Much of this progress has taken place because of your great enthusiasm and contribution to our testing sessions!

We have an alpha 3 server up at 24.251.61.51:27015
This server will host the newest version of Dodgeball and will cycle through the maps that haave been released.
Download the Alpha build and head into the server for some serious competitive Dodgeball mayhem!

Updates/Changes

Balls now have red texture
Hands are animated and catching the opponents ball is possible (but not unless you practice)
Balls respawning fixed on db_skyscraper
Falling Damage fixed on db_skyscraper
Dodgeballs now bounce and react to physics like a rubber ball. They can bounce off of players, walls, the floor and of course, other balls.
Non-Teamplay servers no longer crash on boot.
Dodgeball Background menu image now implemented.
db_prison renamed db_EastLA.
Added crows to EastLA for your aiming practice.
Charging a throw is now necessary to get enough velocity to do damage. (3 seconds is a full charge)

Description of Dodgeball:

Dodgeball is a full game conversion based on the Source Engine. This engine was chosen because of its
use of the Havoc physics engine which will have a huge impact on the feel of this game. Dodgeball will
be a game based on the sport we all love. This is a game designed with you in mind. We are creating an
amazing innovative gameplay experience and focusing on the specific items that will make this game stand
out from the crowd. Dodgeball is available with up to 16 on 16 matches for pure hilarious adrenaline
pumping fun! We are in the process of taking full use of the Havoc physics engine to add to the gameplay
experience. One of the most important things about Dodgeball is the competition. We will be hosting and
facilitating competitions and currently have a forum up at http://www.dodgeball.xsystemmods.com where
teams (clans) can begin to recruit.

I played for half an hour today, with the name Insano.

A couple of suggestions:
  • Remove the metal sound if ball hits floor
  • Remove the sound of the peeping HEV if you die
  • Remove the light that comes after the ball, like it is a granade
  • Maybe some less lag? I don't know if you can fix this.
  • An option that if you hold down your trigger longer, it throws harder and in a straight line.
  • Less HL2 stuff, but it's an alpha so I can accept this for now.
But I know that you have to be with a lot of people until it gets fun :)

Edit: Oh, good job on the ball model! It really looks good!

Maybe a model so that you can see that the other players are holding also a ball and not a nade?
 
Thanks for the feedback! I really appreciate you joining up and testing out the Alpha build. I have noted the items you mentioned and they will be implemented soon. Alot of the things you mentioned are due to the fact that not all content has been added to the game yet. The mod is very young but, still a blast to play. Weve had over 2000 total downloads of alpha 3 and the servers have been full most of the weekend. We are seriously excited and know that this is just a small glimpse of whats to come.


Id love to see you in the server again. I will be testing tonight from 11pm- who knows when (PST) so join up if you can!

it crashed/froze my computer twice when i tried to paly it. it worked for a few seconds then died.
 
We are aware of the crashing issue. It cropped up just before the release of the Alpha 3 build. We will have it resolved by alpha 4. I can tell you though that many people are playing through it and enjoying the mod.

up to number 17 on half life 2 files downloads for the week!

We have also had over 1400 downloads of Alpha 3 from our servers alone!

Ya I had fun when I could play it. are you planning mkaing anymore player models?
 
I've downloaded and had a wee play around by myself, didn't get a chance ot play online yet though.

I understand this is still in alpha but I think you need to be aiming for your own art content, as well as work on more fluid animations. Sound is another big area, you need your own sound effects and whatnot. You should also pick up some decent mappers, since your just dealing with a court you should have no performance issues and be able to fill them up with details, not just a few birds flying in circles but planes and blimps in the distance, cars another the busy street behind the buildings, etc.

I think you could improve on your current throw system to add more depth. Also double tap style dives and flips (need a good animator), and right click if you are holding a ball and if aimed and timed correctly can deflect incoming balls.

Scapegoat is right. If you can do what he says, you'll get a great mod.

Custom stuff is always the best, don't recycle HL2 things unless it's necessairy.

But I also know that this is still an alpha so it's normal that there isn't much custom made.
 
Thanks for the suggestions! I am really glad that you are enjoying the mod so far. Remember that this project has only been public since July 6th! WE have put in hundreds of hours since then and will continue to do so. You are exactly right when you say that custom content is necessary. If you go on our forums at:
