Does anyone know how to turn on the bloom in half life 2?

I have Half Life 2 and Lost Coast. I noticed Lost Coast has a really nice bloom effect, but I can't turn it on for Half Life 2. There is a tick box for it, but whenever I apply it, I open the menu again and it is unchecked. I heard there was a way around this if you have Episode 1 or 2, but I don't.

Can anyone help?

I'm not sure if HL2 is actually set up for it. It was a feature that was added after HL2 was released. When HL2 was released on the Mac its engine got updated to the same version as Half-Life 2: Episode Two but I don't know if that's the case.
