does hl2 need to be installed to play CS:S

hey ive got a steam account with half life 2 and counter-strike source.. but half life 2 cd is not installed on my computer.. just steam.. ive downloaded hl2 and cs:s with updates from steam but when i click to play them it freezes on the splash screen with the 2guys in cs:s and the fuzzy building in hl2.. any ideas?

are you sure it freezed? it takes a long time to load, perhaps your computer isnt up to par. what are your system specs?

ok i downloaded hl2 for online and now cs works but hl doesnt it comes up with a load fail file.. like a lil texture or sumthing.. i have an amd1800 1gb ram and geforce 4mx 440. got css working... really dissapointed as it sucks big time its even worse than tac ops ill just stick with cs me thinks
