Here's my first attempt at Ductonius's M9-H rifle. Still not done the bayonett, and several details I hope to fill in with the skin and normal maps, such as screws and the big grip. There is a small vertex problem on the lower handle which shows in these pics but has been fixed in the meantime. The model still has backfaces intact. (Do we still remove backfaces for HL2? Or are the world models the same as the 1st person view ones, like in Halo?) It's 2,664 faces.

Criticism of the model geometry-wise is welcomed, but send thoughts pertaining to the overall design over to Ductonius here:

Looks nice, a bit of smoothing would help, but otherwise I like it.

it looks kinda cool.. but you need to sort the smoothing out and i think it looks far to thick :S make it thiner and it will look really cool

most of hte model is nice, I agree it is too thick, maybe shortening it up if possible? because that is one big freakin' gun, and the scope doesn't flow with the rest of the gun if you know what I mean and for the handle you need to redo that and did you use the chamfer tool? because it looks like you chamfered itWAY to much but otherwise keep up the good work

Thanks for the feedback, I'm going to add some smoothing groups and redo the handle - it was the hardest bit, I had to resort to boolean cutouts to do it right. :frown: Then I'll do some skinning, wich will make it stand out a bit more, with more detail, etc, which will be fun!

I'll try chamfering the handle again though. max seems to dislike chamfering non-rectangular stuff.

very nice... I don't remember who said it, but reminds me of that Gohst in the Shell gun..

hey, will DO NOT USE BOOLEANS, you will mess up your weapon, just cut and then deextrude into you gun :)

Aww, but booleans are so easy! :D (kidding kidding) I only used two in the model, and I edited the product vertex by vertex to clean it up, so I figure they're ok, as long as I'm careful and don't use unnecessary polys.

Redid the handle and front bit, changed a few shapes that I had clumsily mistaken from the original design. Doing the skin right now!

I like it both ways - the first one was me looking at the plans wrongly, the second is how it's supposed to be. I have about 20 iterations of the model, so the square look is not lost. When all is done maybe there'll be both a square and round version.

Also, I'm crap at skinning. Anybody want to skin this sucker?

Nice Will, the gun looks awesome. If it was pointed at me while in the game I doubt I'd be worrying about more smoothing!

That was me, man.

Ficticious, that's some nice work there. Glad to see you fixed the magazine.

This thing it gonna look awesome finished. Keep it up.

Oh, wow. That looks amazing.

The images dont show up for me so I was wondering what everyone was ooh-ing and aww-ing about, but then I quoted one of your posts and realized they were there all along.

I must say you have captured it to a T. Im really impressed with the model.

Now what it needs is a skin to look cracking.

Like I said, I can't skin too well. This is about my best attempt:

If anybody wants to skin the gun, PM me and I'll send the .max model or .3ds or whatever you want.

edit: the scope and bayonet aren't in that render because they turned out so horribly when skinned I couldn't show them publicly :P
