I''ve been playing the game a bit now, and I honestly think that it is the best FPS ever created.
I never played the original Half-Life (I bought the Silver version so I could do that once I've finished 2). Many people say that the second game does not live up to the first, but my experience of Half-Life 2 is my first experience of Gordon's universe. I also have to say that I don't play many FPSs, and I suppose this is my re-entry into the PC FPS universe (I played Timesplitters and Metroid Prime, and Halo quite recently, but they are not on the PC).
The graphics are amazing. I don't think any other game has better graphics that Half-Life 2. The audio is also very good, although I have grown to hate those beeping and buzzing sounds which accompany the flying insect-like creatures with saws.
The AI is also excellent. I'm playing on normal, and the way in which the Combine fight you is amazing. Although not quite teamwork, this is one of the most impressive AI I have seen.
But what really amazed me was the way that City 17 seemed like a living, breathing city. I really enjoy fiction, and the video screens blaring propaganda reminded me of books such as 1984. The story seems like it will evolve into at least something worth of a good film.
(One more thing - most people talk about GTA: SA, Halo 2, and HL 2 as being the three best games out now. But I think that they have left out Metroid Prime 2. The original was a truly amazing game, and really broke boundaries back when it was released. If you have a Gamecube / have the money to get one, I really recommend getting it)
