I have 3 hard drives, a zip drive, a floppy drive, and 2 cd drives. There aren't enough edie ribbon sockets! Is it just a matter of buying edie cables with more sockets, or what?

Nope, in your case it's a matter of getting a PCI expansion card or a RAID card. (If you have two drives that are identicle RAIDS not a bad idea) Normally if you just have 3 drivers, 1 floppy and 1 cd you can slave the 3rd drive to the CD-Rom drive and it would work. But You're going to need an expansion card to get all of those things together. How big are the drives? If you have any drives that are smaller than 20 gigs I'd reccomend just getting rid of them. Good luck!-Noodly

EDIE = IDE ?....

but yeah, you'll need an expansion card to accomodate more than four IDE devices, unless your motherboard has onboard raid, or extra onboard ata100 connections.

BTW, a floppy drive doesn't use the same connector as a hard drive, just dont try plugging the floppy in using the same cable/port.

Thanks for the swift relpy! okay - that's how I have it set up now:

Master 20 gig : Slave 80 gig
Master cdrw : Slave 3 gig

The 3 gig one is for windows, but windows is steadily expanding, dammit....

I have a zip drive and faster cd rom on my desk, waiting to be put in. I think I'll go for the pci expansion, I can easily afford the slot.

btw - How can I use the pci slot that's so close to my agp slot? I don't want to interfere with the gfx card's cooling...

Then don't :p get a pci slot fan to cool your card, then plugin the expansion card somewhere else.

most people leave that pci slot alone, theres no way to really use it without causing heat to buildup, even if you get a super low profile pci card its still going to be in the way.

my suggestion regarding the drives, ditch the three gig, add a new partition to either the 20 or the 80 and install windows on there, seriously, the three gig is probably old and slow and you might even see a performance increase getting rid of it, also if the 80 gig has an 8MB cache that would be the best drive to install windows on.

i realize this solution probably isnt practical, but it's what i'd do.

you shouldnt need 3 HDDs
ditch the 20 and 3
if you need to make copy what you want to CDs

3HDDs take a LOT of power and adding 2 more drives would slowly kill your PSU or cause problems like random reboots

buy a serial ata controller and SATA HDD, be happy good fun
- ummm, they have those rounded eide ribbon cables... i hear there good, but i was to lazy to ever buy them
