Wasn't sure if I should've posted this in the Literature forum seeing as it looks pretty dead, so more people should see it here. ANYWAY

New Hitchhiker's author announced

Children's author Eoin Colfer has been commissioned to write a sixth instalment of the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy series.

Mostly Harmless, the last Hitchhiker book, was written by its creator, the late Douglas Adams, 16 years ago.

Now Adams's widow, Jane Belson, has given her approval to bring back the hapless Arthur Dent in a new book entitled And Another Thing...

Eoin Colfer, 43, is best known for the best-selling Artemis Fowl novels.

He said he was "terrified" by the prospect of creating a new Hitchhiker book almost a quarter of a century after being introduced to what he described as a "slice of satirical genius" in his late teens.

'Pressure'

"My first reaction was semi-outrage that anyone should be allowed to tamper with this incredible series," he said.

"But on reflection I realised that this is a wonderful opportunity to work with characters I have loved since childhood and give them something of my own voice while holding on to the spirit of Douglas Adams.

"I feel more pressure to perform now than I ever have with my own books, and that is why I am bloody determined that this will be the best thing I have ever written.

The book also spawned a BBC TV series starring Simon Jones

Jane Belson said: "I am delighted that Eoin Colfer has agreed to continue the Hitchhiker series.

"I love his books and could not think of a better person to transport Arthur, Zaphod and Marvin to pastures new. The project has my full support."

Adams died of heart failure in 2001, aged 49.

Around 16 million copies of his Hitchhiker books, which have been translated into 35 languages, have been sold around the world.

Colfer was a primary school teacher in Ireland before he secured the largest ever advance for a children's novel by an unknown author.

His Artemis Fowl series, about a teenage criminal mastermind who wreaks havoc in this world and the next, went on to sell more than 18 million copies worldwide and a film adaptation is due to go into production next year.

And Another Thing... will be published in October next year.

This really don't need to do this. Mostly Harmless kind of wrapped up everything pretty well.

Never read any of them, but then again, I don't read anything - not even the newspaper (well sometimes..)

Wow, first I've heard of this. I love Douglas Adams. I'll pick it up if it becomes a reality.

What the fock? Eoin Colfer is a decent writer but he's nowhere NEAR the rampant, crazed genius that Douglas Adams was.

I'll read it for sure, but I have monstrous doubts that Colfer can meet my expectations.

I doubt Adams would have objected, so more power to everyone involved.

Anyone read [Douglas Adam's] Starship Titanic by Terry Jones? It's based on a computer game written by Adams. It's pretty good.

I picked up Starship Titanic a while back and yeah I liked it. I also have The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul by Adams sitting around here somewhere but for some reason I still haven't read it.

I tried reading the first book. I got through it, but I found it extremely boring and lackluster.

Nah.No way.
No one's gonna buy his book anyway...right guys?....................Guys?

I'll probably buy it. If its decent then ok sure, but if it sucks then Ill just pretend it never really happened and the story ends in Mostly Harmless.

I won't. It could get five stars from every critic in the world- if it's a HHGTTG-book, it must be written by Douglas Adams or the ghost thereof. Otherwise, I will not read it. Will not.

There is no other DNA.

Although quite frankly I wouldn't mind if PTerry and Neil Gaiman collaborated on a HHGTTG book. Though it still wouldn't be a DNA book.

I may only be a sentient bike, but even I can tell that this is the first sign of the coming apocalypse.
