So, now we are basing our opinions on just Drag Racing? Forget AutoX or any other racing event. And the whole "American V8's are superior...." bit is just opinion. You say power output, but what are you speaking of exactly? Horsepower numbers at the wheel/crank? Torque? What about weight to power ratios? To me, it sounds like daddy brought you up to work on his beat up Ford truck, explained all about how his V8 engine is just so awesome, and anything else is just useless foreigner junk. The 2.6 liter Rotary engine, which I posted a drag video in my first post, has a great power to weight ratio. The 1.3 liter version has poor torque numbers, but really good horsepower numbers from a tiny engine. Sure, the engine has downfalls, and sure the V8 has it's advantages to other engines, but just flat out saying one is better than the other is not only extremely arrogant, but also opinionated. You're saying it as a fact, when it's not. Please, take the fanboyism out.

I said power output, not overall superiority or power to weight ratio. I appreciate the rotary engine, it's the only new design in internal combustion engines. But you really can't compare the rotary to a piston engine. How about we compare the horsepower to cost for Amercan and foreign motors. I have yet to see a foreign motor that costs less than $80,000 make more than 600 hp. I have seen $12,000 cars that make 1000 hp. If you want to go to power to weight ratios, then I will too. If the Renesis motor weighs about 245 pounds and makes 232 hp, and the LS7 Corvette motor weighs 458 pounds and makes 505 hp. I believe the LS7 is better in that respect and I can live with an extra 200 pounds.

As for the videos, they were my contribution to the thread, not an arguement against all other types of racing. I enjoy road racing and rally racing. But the fact that one top fuel dragster makes about 9 times the horsepower of a formula 1 car just amazes me. Therefore, I like to watch drag racing more than nascar or F1.

Of course foreign motors are going to be more expensive to upkeep, the shit was build overseas! If everything was produced in Dallas, TX and not in a plant over in Hiroshima Japan, then I'm sure the foreign cars would win as well.

And, please, let's not say the Renesis is best rotary motor out there. If we're going to be comparing, with the 1993 RX-7 that produced 255 hp and had a less overall weight to it.

But saying the conventional piston engine has more raw power to it, well of course....but in most cases, foreign engines are 'easier' to add into forced induction. Then again, most cases, you won't need a turbo or anything in a V8, unless you an enthusiest/dragger.

But saying "American V8's" just makes you sound like a "I hate all foreign cars" person. You could have said V8's, and not sounded so arrogant...

hell, most of those aren't American, though. Sure, they have big ol' conventional piston engines in em, but they aren't American....
 
I was just comparing the rotary that I know the most about. But as for the foreign motors, most of them aren't geared for power, most euro cars that have comparable power to an old Mopar Hemi V8 (426 Hemi dyno test) are mounted in an $80,000 or more car. IE: Ferrari, and Porsche.

What I really mean to say is that American motors make more raw power than any naturally aspirated foreign motor for the cost. American motors that cost the same as a Ferrari motor generally make way more power than the Ferrari. If you then put a blower on an American V8 then you can make upwards of 1000 hp.

It is a fact though that the US makes the only V8 sports cars which are actually affordable and have a decent aftermarket. There definitely are V8 European and Japanese cars(like that Mercedes I just posted) but most of them are either expensive sports or luxury cars, or big trucks/SUVs which aren't meant for speed.

Me, I probably won't buy another American car(I currently drive a Chrysler Grand Voyager...the V6 is powerless but bulletproof) even if I had the money. I want something with a decent interior and good handling, and from what I see that's still something that is more Euro and Japanese territory. Still, it's not hard to see why there are so many Camaros, Mustangs, and Lumina SSs(rebadged Holden Commodore SSs) on Bahrain's roads.
 
OK, now I'm in 100% understanding, and yes you are correct. They are VERY cheap, VERY powerful engines. I just hate when some people just put on the "GAWD BLESS AMURICA" hat and just hate on every other car that's not from this country. There are a couple cars in the US Market that I would enjoy owning, but I'm not a raw power type person....maybe that's why I don't drag. Really, though, I don't anything atm. Trying to get my RX-7 up to power/handling. That, and I don't really know of any tracks near me. I would LOVE to AutoX, but alas, like I said, nothing around. I'm a person that believes in the twisties. Cars that are slower than another a lot of times can keep up if not beat other muscle cars. Granted, there are plenty that are VERY fast and handle VERY well.

EDIT: Also, Pitz, Just so you know I'm not an America-loving fanboy. I love the rotary engine, it's just not right for the way that I drive, or the roads where I live. Most of Kansas is extremely flat, and the roads don't curve much, if at all.

Off-topic: I drove a Corvette to Prom, dear god that was an experience... It's actually rather docile to drive, until you put your foot down and it gets where you want to go, very fast. And it handles better than any car I've ever driven.

vw's can be pretty quick considering they weigh 1800lbs stock... that makes for a killer power to weight ratio :afro:
