Now that Left 4 Dead is out, what is Valve's priority?

Working on Episode 3, or development of Portal 2?

I would believe that their top priorities right now are Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2 and Steam. I see Portal 2 nearer than Episode Three though.
I'm looking forward to Episode Three, however.
Also, I would like to use this opportunity to stress one of my main concerns about Episode Three: Since it's alphabetically earlier than Episode Two, will the Steam Games list appear like this:

Half-Life 2: Episode One
Half-Life 2: Episode Three
Half-Life 2: Episode Two

That would be wrong and all. I think this issue requires some further investigation

They could work on both at the same time.
But i'm pretty sure Episode 3 is the priority right now.

I would have said Episode Three because we know for sure it's being worked on, amd some source code has even been released.
Also, the comment about Portal 2 should not have been and there's a good chance of Episode Three media this year.

I think Left4Dead will still be Valve's priority till the end of this year. Then i think Tf2 and EP3 will also take priority again as well.

Adam Foster is single handedly creating the maps for Ep3, whilst everybody else does extra content for L4D and TF2

I really hope They are making Half life 2 EP:3 a priority.. i mean.. they should have been working on it all this time.. its going to be a big thing for their company i think.. i mean.. the last of half life !! arg!! ok maybe not the lastest.. who knows.. but still.. its supposed to end this series It should have been a priority since orange box came out ( if not sooner )

doesnt necessarily mean it'll be first.. however i can see how adding more to the story with a second portal game before EP:3 would be a good idea to keep it going before finally finishing it with EP:3

I suspect the Portal team has, and will continue to, work on Portal 2 independently of anything else going on at Valve.

Portal 2 would be more interesting if it came out first. They could have links to Episode 3 which seem confusing but when Episode 3 is released it will all make sense.

Speculation n' all that.

Well, news of Portal 2 surfaced earlier than news of EP3 so....
Did it? We've had confirmation of Episode Three's existence since before we knew Portal 1 existed, clear indications what it involves in Episode Two and two pieces of concept art. Of Portal 2, we know that... it's in development, then there's the unsubstantiated rumour that voice casting was attempted for the role of Cave Johnson.

Episode Three will be the priority. Regardless of the likelihood that nothing will come of it, it's the one of the two projects that Doug Lombardi suggested we might hear something about before the end of the year.

Why would they make TF2 a priority? It's been released for a long time, it's not going to be that much of a money maker for them anymore to make it worth their money to continue updating it.

Actually, a while back Valve claimed that they received a significant number of new players every time they released one of their (heavily publicised) big class-based updates. I agree that it's not going to be a 'priority', but I don't doubt that they're going to have a small team to fill out the remaining classes.

And 1 year is not a long time in the life of any game, especially not a Valve game.

I agree that they're going to continue updating it to appease the customers that have already bought the game as well as attract some new customers with a class update. That being said, I agree with you that they would not make it a priority over new (not to mention, major) games that will be massive money-makers for them. I suspect that they will have large teams working on both Ep. 3 and Portal 2 simultaneously, however, I believe (and hope) that Ep. 3 will be released first.

Maybe, if we get lucky, they'll released them together like some sort of orange box deal... in mid 2009. ;)

Lucky, only so long as they don't charge a significant markup on the package by bundling everything we already own in there too (ok, ok. Orange Box was great value even though the two HL2 games were in there. It just felt unfair that newcomers got even more great value :P).

Orange Box was a convenience thing for them. Three modestly-sized games were to hit at roughly the same time (Portal was finished a little before I believe), so it made sense to bundle them all in at once.... that said, even if P2 and HL2EP3 hit at the same time, bundling them together only really makes sense if both games are 'modestly sized'... and there is cause to believe that Valve may decide to make Portal 2 a more substantial sequel, and Episode Three a larger product, to properly round off whatever it is they're finishing in the Half-Life saga.

Episode 3 should be Valve's priority at the moment, but IMO Valve have failed to treat the episodes as a priority for a long time now when they should have been. 'What's another six months of leaving it, relatively speaking, on the back burner?' they might be inclined to think. That's my fear.

They should have the Orange Box 2 with Episode 3, Portal 2, Team Fortress 3 & Left 5 Dead.

The most logical name for a Left4Dead sequel is obviously 5Alive.

yeah, im sure they have the company split up with a larger team for ep3 and a small team for portal 2.

Isn't portal 2 like a huge, full-scale project. Doug said a long time ago that it was going to be a full release like Half life 2 was. So im sure they're probably working on EPisode 3 more since its just an episode. Portal 2 may be on w.e engine they make next, if they make an engine. its gonna take a lot longer...

Where did you hear that? I very much doubt that Portal 2 will be a full scale project like Half-Life 2.And i really doubt it would get a new engine. Source is still very capable and is more than enough for Portal 2. I think that Portal 2 will be a bit longer, but not a full scale game.
