My computer has been acting up when i get to a certain point it begins to stutter and freeze resulting in me having to rely on the autosave function to restart

i got to the hospital level and after loading it began to stutter to which i reset my computer when i reload the game the main menu scren was set to the first one being the citadel which was strange the next thing was that i have no saved games what so ever !

this means that i have to start the game from the begining

is this a bug or is there something that can be done to get my saves back

Are you still able to start other chapters from the New Game menu, or can you only select the first level?

Additionally, if you're having performance problems, take a look at this linked thread and try some of the fixes. -->> http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=107446 :)

EDIT: Also, try this:

Open Steam.
Under the My Games tab, right-click on Half-Life 2: Episode 1 and select Properties.
Under the Local Files tab, you have the following options...
............................"Backup game files" <<--use this one to make a copy of your saved games once you return to the section that you are repeatedly stuttering in.
............................"Delete local game content" <<--DON'T CLICK this one unless you want to remove all your saved games (this is only used for uninstalling or resetting game files).
............................"Verify integrity of game cache" <<--use this one to make sure that you are not missing any files that would be affecting performance.
............................"Defragment cache files" <<--use this one to help repair any damage that was caused by your forced restart (it's unlikely but you might be able to get your saves back).

That's unfortunate. The same thing happened to me when I played Far Cry a couple of years ago. Very frustrating having to go through most of the game again.

Well try the Steam options I suggested, and then check the thread I linked to see if you can prevent this problem from happening again.
