Hi,

I've been installing HL2: Episode 1. Steam is currently at the "Creating Local game cache files..." part. Its been this way for about 2 hours so far. Their are some animating dots on the dialog and the yellow squares have filled up the bar.

Should I just keep waiting? Any thoughts on this?

On a side note, I tried installing HL2 (original) and could not get passed 20% decrypting and left that for about 10 hours. Not sure if these two problems are related or not.

Any help or thoughts is appreciated.

Thanks,
John

whats ur system specs, maybe u have too many programs running in the background simulataniously.

have u tried uninstalling STEAM & HL2 completly?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

Yah, I've done the steam unintall->install thing. I also ran some steam diagnostics I found on the forums and everything checked out fine.

My PC is a 2GH AMD with 1Gig of RAM. All I have running is FireFox, Windows Explorer and Outlook Express.

Just to be clear, I've uninstalled everything to do with steam and half life. I currently have steam freshly installed, HL2 installed (but not decrypted) with CS installed but not updated and am trying to install Episdoe 1.

let HL2 update to the final stage, then once that has happened reboot steam & then try install EP1, not decrypted as in u aint bought it yet??

I fink u mite need to buy HL2 in order to play EP1 as its a addon, rather than stand alone.

HL2 I have CD's for.
Episdoe one I am installing from DVD. So I have purchased both. I heard on another thread that Episode 1 was stand alone which is why I'm trying to install it with out HL2 finishing. It hasnt' complained. (maybe this is a silent complaint).

Either way HL2, won't finish decrypting (stuck at 20%) so I can't play anything at this point.

dont try & install/decrypt HL2 & install EP1 at once, uninstall EP1, let HL2 fully download & complete, then reboot steam, then install/decrypt EP1

Oh and from what I've seen on the box, there is not mention that you need HL2 to player Episode one...

Yah, I tried that through last night (waiting for HL2 to fully finish). But after 10 hours it was still trying to decrypt at was stuck at 20%. This is why I started to try Episode one only.

maybe not, i dont know i downloaded from steam.
Well since its taking so long, it could be that the VALVE servers are busy still, u r decrypting HL2 at the same time trying to insall EP2 & decrypt it, therefor going to put alot of strain on ur system.

Do one fing at a time, its alot less stressfull.

Kewl. I've uninstalled everything, steam included and will try just installing episode one...after I reboot.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Quick update:
So its currently installing Episode 1, but its doing the same thing as before where it just sitting at the install dialogue with all yellow bars filled up. Its Been about 30 minutes. We'll see where it goes.

botton right of screen is a steam icon, has it got dots on it, if so it will be updating, this may take some time as is depends on ur connection & how busy the servers are.

What connection speed do you have?

Are you sure your firewall isn't blocking Steam? Or any of the HL2 exe's?

Is Steam installed correctly BEFORE you try to install the game?

Remember that once a program has changed (ie it is updating itself) that the firewall may detect that and "protect" your system by stopping it's online priviledges untill you tell your firewall that it is ok. This can happen several times during an install/update.

So here is quick update as everything is now working.

First, I turned off my firewall just to make sure.

For Episode 1: I put in the disc, but didn't install from the disc. I went to steam, right clicked on Episode 1 and hit install. It installed just fine this time. :)

For HL2: I did the same as above, however, it took much a longer. I left it for an hour and it was still stuck at the installing dialogue. I went to bed, woke up and it was installed. :)

So now I went for counter strike. It was also stuck on the installing screen. After about 20 minutes, I cancelled it. The cancellation took like 5 minutes and when I came back to look at it, it was downloading counter strike.

So it is possible it was the firewall, but there is still some odds delays with Steam and installing/cancelling.

Thanks to everyone who responded. Every little bit helps.
