Apparently there is a trick which involves extracting files before gameplay, which allows for smoother fps as the game doesnt spend resources extracting stuff??

Any tips pls

i remember reading something like this for doom 3. apparently it was debunked by an iD employee. if you still want to try it, get GCFscape from
http://countermap.counter-strike.net/Nemesis/index.php?p=26 and extract the following files into some directory:

half-life 2 content.gcf
source engine.gcf
source materials.gcf
source models.gcf
source sounds.gcf

then try to run hl2.exe. should work (i think).

NOTE: this only works if you've unlocked the gcf's by buying a steam package. you can't just preload and then use gcfscape to play for free! ;)

it works, but u wont get performance increase
only level loading times may slightly decrease.
ingame performance will stay the same

I tried this and got a "Graph node out of date" message in-game and then an "A.I. Disabled Message"

But shouldn't this be helpful on low memory systems (like 256MB RAM)? Decreased loading times would be pretty much apprecieated - that would probably also mean a bit less swapping on start of map...

Here is how to fix it:
1. Make a autoexec.cfg in your root\hl2\cfg\ folder. (make a txt file and rename it)
2. Put this in your autoexec.cfg: ai_norebuildgraph 1
3. Save & have fun playing.
