I guess the best way to let Alyx and the Vort feel like characters is to... let them feel like characters, and not to horribly abuse them by treating them like the bulletproof robots they are.

Although i guess really they shouldn't be bloody bulletproof robots, huh.

Urgh... Half-Life 2 when you meet up with Alyx at Nova Prospekt... just annoying.

"Hey Gordon! I'm going to run blindly into these Shotgun-weilding-Combine! Come and attempt to save me pointlessly! Yeah, I know you have limited health too, and you like your armour nicely juiced up, but it doesn't matter, because you're staring at my arse!"

..her ass DID take my attention..Whoops.

You're a bit spastic, mate. She could handle shotgunners by herself.

Now, I think optional comrades is not a bad idea. In HL1 you could make them stay behind if you liked. Not the case in HL2.

Of course, this option would be limited in the case of plot important NPCs, but it would be very preferred for your generic rebel. It's not like you ever face a situation in HL2 or the episodes where you require the NPCs to be with you survive.

EDIT: Not counting the bits where they have guns and you don't.

You mean basically the scripted bits :p.

And no, she seemed to find shotguns very... need a descriptive word for the fact that she'd always end up dead.

She'd run across a corridor to some stairs on the right, where there's a fortunate combine to take a few shots at her. Sure, she'd kill him, but then proceed to run blindly up the stairs in ignorance of the shotgun-combine at the top who'd take a wonderful chunk of her apart, only to be finished off with another who'll come up behind her.

Just like... argh! bitch! Can't watch your ass forever...!

Do you like, not use grenades much? That's what they are for, you know. Throw them around a corner as she goes forward, no friendly fire. :O
