I assume that you're trying to play off-line. You're right about the way the loading of this game is organised..it's a right...well, I better not say it in case I got struck off. Anyway, this was how I did before I almost gave up.
After you've successfully created a Steam account:
1)you open it and click play games,
2)right click hl2 properties and you see its status menu; it will tell you the off-line status; eg, ready or nor not ready, amount required: must be 100% and ready. If it's not ready and less than 100% then make sure in the automatic update box, 'Always keep the game up to date' is chosen. For some reason not all the updated files have been loaded into the game.
3)Just leave your connection on because the update will automatically be downloaded; in my case it took about an hour.
4)If you want to check how it's going go back to steps 1 & 2.
5)Once it's achieved 100% and ready status, you're on.
YOU MUST MAKE SURE THAT YOU'VE CHECKED 'REMEMBER MY PASSWORD' OPTION WHEN YOU LOG IN TO PLAY THE GAME.[/B]
