Hello

to be honest in my view it makes little difference now if valve announce episode 3 or not because its been a solid 2 years now since episode 2. And here we are with Left 4 Dead getting a sequel within a year! This announcement is only after 6 months! Half Life 2 Episode 1-3 should have been long over by now! Werent they susposed to be 6 months apart! That means it should have only taken a year and half to got this over with!! This should have been over with sometime back in 2006!! i mean for christ sakes valve half life 2 came out in 2004! it's now 2009! It will be closer to 2010 at earilest now for episode 3! I really fail to see how it can take this long! To be honest a lot of the content in the episodes was the stuffed that failed to make it in the half life 2 game (which was far to short).

I really think Half Life is a dead series :( clinging onto a lost cause here really, if it wasnt for counter strike half life 2 woudlnt of happened.

This reminds me of the sims for simcity fans! Once a spin off game is making more cash than the main game that made the company who they are it seems to get left to rot. Left 4 Dead is probably (unfortunatly) got a bigger fan base than half life now! A couple of friends of mine who have left 4 dead for the Xbox 360 dont even know who valve are and never even played half life 1 or 2, so it sadly kinda goes to show that half life is probably ending up with a cult following with a minority fan base (like simcity to the sims :(

simcity was totally trashed and ruined and forgotten about and its fans left in a depression state of affairs with no sequel in 5 years while the sims got a new addon every 6months, and i unfortunatly see valve going same way with half life!

even if we get episode 3 news at E3 then what? will there be episode 4? half life 3? im betting we see left 4 dead 3 before half life 3 now

sad times, i guess they have to go where the money is now

I don't see this happening at all. I think you're overreacting.

Half-life will continue to move on as long as the story stays strong alongside it. Marc Laidlaw has plenty of ideas, it's not finished yet. Episode 3 will be something big, and it will end this part of the story arc and we don't know what will be in store for after that. Valve aren't going to let it fall away when it is the central pillar which made them in the first place.

Valve are a growing company with teams working on separate projects. Notice how L4D2 has been developed while TF2 has been updated? Note how it is very easy and possible to develop titles individually? Note the Portal team haven't been heard from for a while. Think about these things.

There is a long way to go yet, L4D building the Valve name into a more prominent player in game development isn't a bad thing. In 6 hours you will be happy once again.

:) hope ur right man, i sure hope i am over reacting! lot of simcity feelings coming out here to cause it reminds of the same thing! just hope valve prove me wrong but it is still very bad and different of valve to make a sequel so soon!

I think they should have focused more on Ep3.
2 years of tweaking and brainstorming would make the game epic

You are overreacting :)
Half-Life is still very important for Valve, perhaps the most important project. They said Ep3 is ambitious - it can take a long time to test new ideas and stuff. Besides, isn't Left4Dead a TurtleRock project? They are a part of Valve right now, but it's still a separate team, correct me if I'm wrong.

Valve have already stated that the 6 month timeline between releases was unrealistic. The Episodic schedule hasn't really been tried before and Valve had hoped to release a squeal every 6 months, but it proved to difficult. Fans demanded longer games and more features and tech which take time. The Episodes don't contain much cut content from HL2 the only thing i can think off the top off my head are the Antlion grubs that's it. If Valve see fit to reintroduce cut content where it will fit then why shouldn't they. Also i think you are way off in saying HL2 is to "far to short", it's a damn sight longer than alot of FPS games out now. COD4,FEAR2 are half the size of HL2.

I really think Half Life is a dead series :( clinging onto a lost cause here really, if it wasnt for counter strike half life 2 woudlnt of happened.

What has Counter Strike got to do with HL2? Valve made more than enough with HL to finance HL2. HL is one of the most popular FPS of all time there was always going to be a second regardless of Counter Strike.

Again, you haven't a clue what you are on about. Valve have a complete separate team working on L4D that never had any influence over HL. Those guy's used to be Turtle Rock before Valve bought them and as such they are working on there own project L4D while Valve are working on Episode 3 and Portal 2 and who knows what else. There will be a HL3 but it will take time. Every Half life game to date hasn't failed and has always improved from the last one it just takes time. Valve are just to slow something we as fans have learned to get over.

This is my point really it doesnt matter what happens now the damage has been done, the fact that left 4 dead was announced before episode 3 is very bad PR, but also it will be out within a year of the last game! This is what the episodes should have been really.

Before this news I could understood games took time but i think that was just all BS its just "go where the money is" and the mass customer base. Really I think this has shown a new and dark side to valve that now makes them no different to EA and other such game companys.

I can understand you need to go where the money is and would even accept left 4 dead becoming a sucessor to the half life series! But forgod sakes the episodes really should have been tied up years ago! Its a fact and everybody knows it. We could argue all day but either way valve have screwed up here really and I think its a real shame as i am a huge fan of there work!

anyway hopefully episode 3 out this winter with a nice end to half life 2 story and we can move on, cant stand left hanging on a good story :( lol

No no i totally understand the history turtle rock and Valve stepping in! dont presume i dont know nothing! I didnt come here to debate this :( even like left 4 dead its a good game! just not happy the way valve have handled this and leaving how i feel on a forum! I am not alone on this! episode 3 news is well over due then they announce a big sequel! kinda throws it in the half life fan base faces really thats all i was saying! as i said i didnt come here to debate it. I know lot of teams on each game! im not that naive!

HL community is full of crybabies.

whhaaa whaaaa wherez mah ep33 waaa

Im sure the new left 4 dead fans wouldnt even be loyal enough to wait 6 years for a sequel! I can wait just think valve should get there priorities right really! not even tied off the lose ends on half life! ok its another team! then i blame the PR team for allowing this rush of media! we not even got 1 episode 3 picture LOL! yet this comes out the blue! its shocking and says MONEY GRABBING! all over it. part reason valve had so much respect was because they werent like other game companys that just churn out sequel each year

Relax - wait until after this afternoon at least for their conference, and if Valve doesn't say jack about EP3, then sit and wait. If they don't say anything at all during E3, well...I doubt that'll happen.

I've never seen more exclamation points used unnecessarily in just a few posts.

I'm not mad at Valve at all for announcing / releasing L4D before Ep. 3. The only thing that Valve disappointed me by is that L4D2 was announced at all. I never really liked the game so I guess I'm pretty bias, but I felt like it was a strange move to announce it now when they're first game is still selling. Them announcing it now is going to cause people that would have bought the first one not to now and just wait for the second: they're competing with their own product. The only reason I can see for them allowing microsoft to announce it now is that they're planning to release it with other products that are due this year and wanted to meet a deadline (*cough* Ep. 3 / Portal 2 *cough*).

Anyways, basically I just want Ep. 3 this year. I know for certain that they're not just sitting around doing nothing so the time that we hear nothing is time spent making the game better.
