So, we have hologram projection screens, but 1980's Phone Booths? Just joshin' the game is amazing. I'm stuck in the sewer.

It's Eastern Europe... there are many older phone booths there now. The events in HL2 are around 2008, but the Combine aren't really the guys who care for the wellbeing of citizens. So I don't think that putting new phone booths would be their priority - while getting good screens for Breen certainly is. I actually thought it was a great realism touch.

ah, seems farther in the future. how do I get out of the sewers?

If you're stuck, make a thread in the Singleplayer spoiler forum, and preferrably attach screenshots of the place you're stuck in. Or at least give a better description - sewers is a big place :p.

how do you know what year it is?

10 years after hl1? which was around 1998 approx prolly

I assume that the events of HL1 took place when it was released, 1998. The different estimates for timeframe between HL1 and HL2 are around 10 years, some putting it at 8 or 12. So 2008 seems like the best bet for me.

did valve say the game was supposed to take place in 1998? anyway isn't half life 2 set 15 years after hl1? it was either 15 or 16

I would think it would be more then 10 years considering Alyx's age and all.
The Black and white picture of Eli and Alyx in his lab show's her as an infant and he mentions that it was taking around the time of the black mesa incedent, unless I'm mistaking. So I'm guessing more like 20 years.
