Now From what i have collected thru hl1 and hl2 Gman is a Agent for
his "Authorities", most likly to find a subject to help him complete his mission. on his own or ordered do this, is unknown.
but at the end of the game he does sound like he made that decsion on his own and he was allowed to do that.
Now the bigger picture as what i can see is that Gman is trying to create the accident that creates the "protal storm" and the combine ect. now it was also speculated that the combine were talking to breen before the accident and set up the accident.
which is does sound pretty soild as thruout the game the npc say alot of negitive things about breen (the adminastrator). they also say that the admin has great intrest in the sample which give the impression also.
now back to the gman, he at the very frist time you see him hes in a room were a some one is talking to him but all the speech you can here is muffled.
a while back some people decoded this muffling here are the lines are some key lines that suggest somthing...
sci_mumble.wav: "I've told you a hundred times, I am opposed to pushing this equipment beyond the test levels."
here this suggest that gman wants the accident
but it also suggest that breen doesn't wants the accident maybe just a portal
gman_2.wav: "he must _not_ get in the way." or "you must _not_ get in the way."
it not entirly sure what it is but these seam to be the 2 things that alot of people heard
"he" would proably be some one like breen or Eli (or some one unknown right now), if it was "you" then it may just be gman tring to stop him from stopping the experiment
gman_5.wav: "My employers think it's greed." or "My employers is destined to lead"
another unsure phrase
Greed sounds like he's trying to convice the scientist to go against a "corrupted" admin because of greed (covering up his tracks?)
destined to lead make the story totally diffrent it makes it out to be that gman's employers are trying to toppel the combine empire
maybe to free the countless worlds that are in the combine graps. which sounds more logical because why free 1 or 2 (xen) when the combine will just come back and gman authorities at this time look alot better than what the combine are doing.
now at the end of the game in hl2 gman sounds more as negoiator for more that one authority and the gman is in it for the money or whatever and he's working alone he steps off though and leaves you in hl3 were you awake proably 5 more years post combine and the such.
the "deal" that gman chooses for you is not even hinted anywere so just guess will have to do...
