game controllers on HL2 ?

My friend saw HL2 on my PC and wants to
play with a joystick.
He got a Logitech Dual Action USB controller,
it has a d-pad and 2 little joysticks.

Problem is that the d-pad, which we assign
for forward/back & strafing does not work very well.
It seem like you have to press it at exactly at
90 degree angles for it to work, and even then
sometimes Gordon doesn't move.

If someone else is using a game controller
successfully with HL2, or knows what I need to do
to get this going, please tell me.

hmm cant say I have tried, why would you want to anyway? the game wasnt really supposed to be played with a controller/joystick.

Tell him to learn to play with a kb/mouse. Might be really confusing for someone who's never played PC FPS's before, but he'll get the hang of it. Playing with a gamepad sounds rediculously awkward.
