gameinfo.txt doesn't exist in hl2dm.

you can copy the file from another directory (like /hl2 or /cstrike), but have to change one value - SteamAppId. it's 320 for hl2dm.
that should do it

no, the probleme is to get HL2 running. not HL2dm :P

There is a gamedata.txt file in the HL2 directory, but not in the hl2dm directory, nor in any other steam game folder.

hmm
I foun like 8 gamedata.txt files in my steam folder...

if the error states that there's none in hl2dm folder (judging by the threads title) try to copy it from hl2 directory and change the SteamAppId

i get this problem with hl2 itself and any mods that use hl2 as a base...eg. substance. the error states:

"the file gameinfo.txt does not exist in weapons."

i dont even no which gameinfo.txt is missing... can some one give me a list of all the files that there should be and the "value" or wot ever that i would need to change wen i find which file is missing.... thnx very much

I had this problem with all Steam games after the latest steam update (the one that updated the SDK) ... all gameinfo.txt files were missing.

I even carried out the procedure to refresh all the SDK settings (that valve said would fix the issue) but it didn't work. In the end I had to get my mate to send me his copies of the files.

Nice going, VALVe.

I get the same when trying to open Garry's Mod with the shortcut, but it works starting it from the game list. Try doing that.

Open the file's properties and look at the target box, for Garry's mod, it will look like:
"C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 220 -game ""c:\program files\valve\steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\garrysmod""

Notice the double quotes on the second path, remove those and the shortcut should work.

The target line should look like "C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 220 -game "c:\program files\valve\steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\garrysmod"

As for Vanilla HL2, it works fine for me, but if you made another shortcut through the steam interface, just do the same thing as above if it shows double quote marks.
