From listening to it over and over, it really DOES sound like FOR BEAR FREEMAN! WE RECCOMEND... Sex.

But it REALLY sounds like Sex. I dont know why. (Note, my apotraphe key is kinda messed in Firefox, it opens the find thing so I cant use it)

listen to it again and keep in mind that it says silence. it will become very obvious to you that he is saying silence.

Still sounds like sense to me. However, I can believe silence, so I will agree with that. I am losing my hearing after all.

And he says "Use caution Freeman!" after that so it makes more sense "We recommend silence".

On a second thought, he might as well say "Use caution Freeman!" after offering sex. :)

Put your ear up to the speaker...or use headphones. It's silence. =p

Nope, it's sense. Turned my 5.1 speakers as loud as they could; heard sense, no gurgle to cover up any syllable.

He goes, 'Forbear, Freeman! We reccomend... sense.' After that, when you peer down into the hole, he goes, 'That sound... use caution, Freeman.'

If you play it backwards, it says something about worshipping the devil. Well, I'm pretty sure it's the devil, either him or Elmo.

"sense" would be ironic, considering it would be disjointed english that barely actually makes sense. "Silence" fits much better. "Sex" would be best though.

This argument is getting silly.

"We recommend sex" doesn't make any sense. Gordon and the Vort are infiltrating an Antlion nest so why the hell would the Vort want to recommend sex? That would be silly/random/dumb/pointless/stupid/etc.

"We recommend sense" is even more silly. Marc Laidlaw is a brilliant writer and I really doubt that he would write something so poorly like "we recommend sense."

"We recommend silence" actually works. The Vort is cautioning Gordon and actually giving him useful advice, not sense (what the hell?) or sex (dumb, dumb, dumb).

But the vort does say sense. No one's arguing about whether, well, it actually makes sense. :P

But thats just stupid. If it doens't make shens, it wouldn't say it. Silence does because antlions could easily sence(!) the vibratins going thorugh the walls (as if their sounds).

Unless the audio has changed drastically, even from the low res videos that were out a while ago you can clearly hear its "silence".

Actually, 'silence' would make sense (sorry).

It is possible that a new gameplay element is introduced this way - the player has to sneak around the antlion larvae so that they would not alert the antlion queen/other antlions.

Also, in the gameplay videos, didn't the antlions appear after the player had whacked several of the larvae with the crowbar?

I don't think people really believe he might be saying sex. It just became a joke among people with shens of humor.

Why are you anlyzing the writing. The vort says "Sense" , it isn't poor writing cause he's writing for an alien being. Though "Silence" makes sense from the gamplay stuff introduced , the vort says "Sense" and i'm positive about it.

I can't be bothered to argue, the fact is, Silence makes more sence (why does this word keep coming up?) so I'm gonna beleive that. It doens't really matter.

actually i argue that none of the cases except "silence" makes sense.

it both sounds like silence (very clearly) to me, and it makes the most sense too.

also, watch the rest of the videos and you'll see that gordon avoids stepping on the antlion larva because they squeal out and attract antlions if he does. he accidently steps on some throughout the video and he doesnt get hurt, but they do squeal, which suggests the answer as to why he is avoiding stepping on them: to be silent

Why doesn't someone email VALVe and ask about it. Or we could wait till 2007 and put on captions to see what he really says.

lol, I only registered to view the images of the ApertureScience.com thread.

But honestly, it's "Silence", thread over

Not moving from "Sense". I heard nothing that sounds like "Silence".

In the crappy shaky-cam videos, it sounds like it could be "sense". In the VERY crappy YouTube versions of those videos, it sounds a lot like "sex" (which is definitely not true). In the uber high-res Steam videos with 10x better sound quality, it is 100% "SILENCE".

EXACTLY. FOR GODS SAKE PEOPLE DOWNLOAD THE HD VERSION AND LISTEN. THREAD OVER PLZ.

This discussion is ridiculous. He clearly recommends...sadness.

Stop being so high and mighty, willya? Just because other people heard sense and you heard differently doesn't mean that the silence group is right. So far, your only arguments are... 'we heard silence', and 'sense would not make sense'.

But vortigaunts HAVE been know to say things which do not SEEM to make sense. Anyway, I really don't think stepping on the slugs will cause the entire hive to hear it and go 'omg there an intruder! we must attacks!' The sound of the slug being squished is as loud as you running around, which defeats the purpose of the slugs as sentries.

EDIT:

EXACTLY. FOR GODS SAKE PEOPLE DOWNLOAD THE HD VERSION AND LISTEN. THREAD OVER PLZ.

Consider the fact that we, I dunno, HAVE?

And really, 'omfg, shut up. your opinion differs from mine and therefore you are inferior' will not make shens anytime soon.

Sense makes more sense to me. It's the kind of quasi-cheeky comment that Valve had in halflife 2, like the only talking in their language when alone or saying something bad about people.

Hi Gabe,

I'm extremely excited about the three games coming out next year and the website www.aperturescience.com is making it a lot of fun, but for some reason people are dwelling on the Episode 2 trailer 1 and whether the line is "We recommend sense" or "We recommend silence". Is emailing the head of Valve a stupid way of resolving it? Yes. But it's also a way to get a very definate answer. So could you please let us know what the line is, so that we can all get back to figuring out what all this cake business is about?

Cheers
Ben.

P.S.
On the off chance that you answer this I'd just like to declare how disappointed I am with myself that this is what I chose to email you about.

"We recommend...silence."

So yes, the silence group triumphs. I also heard silence after minutes of thorough testing (hopefully I'm wrong and the email is fake :P).

But my previous post still stands; having an opinion that is different from others doesn't mean you can bash the other's opinion.

EDIT: Darn vortigaunt covered it up so well D:

Heheh, thanks for quoting it, I was so excited that I got a response that I didn't see this thread. So yeah, the email is genuine, it's nice to see "Marc Laidlaw" in your "From" list.

When I first saw the trailer on youtube I was a "Sense" guy, but then I heard "Silence" on the HD ones.

I think that it works just like the antlion pheropods - when you step on the slugs they release pheromones that attract the antlions.

Well, it just goes to show how easily Vortigaunt speech can be misunderstood. I always thought it was "Silence", but I used to have a problem with "persevere" in "This is more than anyone can bear, but we will persevere", the way he extended out the syllables, I couldn't make it out until I looked it up.

peeks you dumbass.

Anyway, why is there a mechanical gate in an antlion hive? Did they take over a warehouse or something?
