so hl2 won the best shooter award at gamespot today and it beat out halo 2 (thank god) so i was thinking doesnt that take halo 2 out of the picture for game of the year? I would think that only leave half life 2 and gtasa but i fear that theyll give it to gta *tear*

Rome Total War is a contender as well. Halo 2 is definitly not making the cut, as it got nominated for 'biggest disapointment'

Now edit the thread topic so it appears appropriatly like a question, instead of a statement. :p

I found it kinda interesting that they gave Halo 2 a better score than HL2 and then wound up giving best shooter to HL2 anyway.

Good choice IMO, but still seems a little inconsistent.

That is a tad odd...in fact that's downright bizarre.

How do they pick best shooter? Do all the gspot writers get together and vote? Maybe hindsight is finally gnawing at them...

This might seem like a typo, since Halo 2 easily earned our Editor's Choice award. But considering the lofty expectations for this game, the abrupt conclusion to the single-player campaign left us and many other Halo 2 fans feeling sour. Fortunately, we got over it quickly thanks to the game's amazing multiplayer mode, but a significant percentage of Halo 2 players don't get to play online, and are stuck wondering how come this story has no ending.
But who cares, really? Alls well that ends well!

Overall hl2 is the winnar. I think hl2 will sell copies alot of copies in the future, hl is still being sold with the platnium pack.

No. The use a modified random number generator that they use to give scores to games.

World of Warcraft got a pretty decent review (95%) but it seems that Gamespot's review marks actually mean bugger-all at the moment. Just take the PC GOTY nominees: http://www.gamespot.com/gamespot/features/all/bestof2004/day5f_11.html
By Gamespot's rankings, the list should look like this:

World of Warcraft
UT2004
Riddick
Half-Life 2
Rome: Total War

Yet HL2 has already beaten off UT2004 to the best shooter award and I don't think anyone would be suprised to see it as PC GOTY.
