gamespy interview with doug Lombardi!

Q. Are there any plans for a standalone Half-Life 2 multiplayer part, deathmatch, co-op, somewhere down the line?
Doug Lombardi: Nope.

Well if they checked the servers people are running they'd see HLDM is still going strong. I'm really surprised they aren't going to bother with HLDM.

Q. Will we be seeing any new content/maps With CS: Source the only multiplayer component to HL2, are we going to be seeing any new content/maps in the retail version that people have not seen before?

Doug Lombardi: New content for CS: Source is forthcoming, as is Day of Defeat: Source and more. Please stay tuned.

The other question asked if there would be a standalone HLDM, meaning being sold by itself. Don't discount HLDM as a free dl if they do make it, because theyve got something planned.

Well, I guess puts a stake into the heart of the question of whether they will be working on any form of HL2 MP.

Kinda like a big ol' FU to the fans. Thanks, Doug! Right back atcha!
:flame:

As Chief Wiggin's would say. "That's good work, boys!"

Yeah, that sucks there isn't any.

I guess I can't blame them. If it isn't included in the initial release, there isn't much point in competing with the Mod Makers. It's better they concentrate on getting the SDK out and keep working on TF2 and whatnot. I mean for those people who care.

At the time of this writing, Gamespy.com's stats show that less than 500 are currently playing vanilla deathmatch, placing it 6th on the list. Team oriented games like Counter Strike, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress Classic, and Natural Selection take the top 5 spots (Counter Strike takes first and second place with Counter Strike and Condition Zero).

Looking at those stats alone, it's no wonder Valve didn't put any time into developing a deathmatch mode.

I won't argue the poularity of the team-oriented tactical games online, but I don't really play online and I think that those games are probably played less at LAN parties than online, relatively.

I think DM and related modes are still popular at home gaming sessions. Maybe not HL, but certainly UT games are still played quite a bit.

Valve just ought to make a basic multiplayer component for Half-Life 2, and then let modders expand upon it, eventually adopting it and having a fully working MP part created by the community.

Uh, those stats only show HL-based games. Certianly HL DM is not that poular right now. What about displaying stats that include other MP games online? Since the vast majority of the HL-based games are team-oriented to begin with, the stats are skewed that way by default.

I'd wonder how DM, or non-tactical games compare overall. I'd bet they are a lot closer.

Sweet reading now!

Thats the same interview i read few hours ago errr!

The "And more" part probably refers to the other source ports.. IE Ricochet, TFC and DMC.

My view on the HL 2 not having "native" MP:

TF 2 is their MP-focus. DM is old, they want to do something new.

Is TF2 within the HL world? Unless major changes are implemented, TF2 will not be "new" either. Someone would have to get pretty darn creative to come up with an original idea nowadays.

Nothing is known about the current TF2.

HL engine TF2 was expected to be comparable to TFC meets Battlefield 1942 meets Day of Defeat. IMO.

If you ask me BF and clones beat TF2 to it.
I wonder if there will be any mayor changes what makes TF2 stand out again.

Oh and no TF2 is not suposed to be in the HL world.
