The drive I have Steam etc in is getting full fast. It seems there are about 11 gig of *.GCF files in the "Steamapps" folder. To pare this down do I just have to delete the games I no longer play?

Thanks

If you do, it can cause problems...what games do you have installed?

I deleted all the files of the Steam games I didn't have installed before. I didn't have any problems, but that's just me. You mightn't be so luck. Either way, I doubt it will cause any trouble that a re-install won't fix.

I have HL, HL2, Episode 1, SIN, SIN Emergence, CounterStrike Source, Deathmatch, and about six third party mods. installed in a 28 gig eide hard drive. Each of the GCF files is tagged with the name of a game, what if I move the GCF files of the games I rarely use to another drive that has a ton of room and then move them back when and if I need the games??

I'd say the safest way to remove a game is to right click it in the Steam list, and select "Delete local content."

I don't think this works for mods though, you can just delete/move the mod's folder from the /steam/steamapps/sourcemods directory.

If you wanted to keep a .gcf instead of downloading it again later on, I guess you could copy it to the larger drive and then use 'delete local content' with Steam. Then when you want the game back you can just move the .gcf back over to the small drive, and see what Steam thinks of it :P

Naudian, that sounds like a plan. Thanks to all for the replies.

This is fine, do this and you shouldn't get any problems. Just ensure that when you copy the game content files back that Steam isn't running.

Even if you select "delete local content" for all of them there are still a few files on your PC for them left. Deleting them freed me over a gig.
