Gmod 9 Query

I gave half-life 2 as a gift to one of my friends on steam and was just wondering if you needed anymore source games other than half-life 2 to run Gmod 9 since I want to play with him online. Before anyone says I should get Gmod 10, I have it it's just my friend doesn't want to buy stuff online.

I believe you are in need off CSS and HL2DM in order to play Gmod 9.

I think I read some where that you can run GMod 9 without CSS if you change one of GMod's config files.
Do some googling you're not the first person to ask this so I'm sure that the answer is out there.
