You cant run HL2 on just a great graphics card I'm afraid. In fact, I run it extremely well @800x600 with a Radeon 7500 64MB

You're gonna have to give more details than that. What's your current card, what slot is your mobo, do you have a figure in mind that you'd like to spend. Is the card just for playing this generations games or are you looking for it to play new coming games well too.
