Can any1 please tell how well a 256mb ati radeon 9550 will wit half life2?
 
Hm, I dunno. I had a 9550 with 512mb of ram (but it was the 128mb version) and I ran it at 1024x768, on medium, with no AA, and I got a good framerate from that, about 70 or 80.
 
well dont be too sure, i g0t a geforce4mx and it does 50-60 generally, drops to 30-40 in firefights (all high settings)

u get that fps because your card dosent support anything that hl2 renders

That card would struggle to render a JPG.
 
AA... doesn't it stand for anti aliasing? And what does it actually do?

smooths out the textures, instead of u seeing a gun with loadsa jaggered edges, it will smoothen them out to look straigh, but with a decreas in performance
 
I see. Makes it all look better, but makes an impact on how well your computer will be able to run it. I hope I can turn it up a bit, and still have a good performance one I have my new computer :)
 
It's possible to run HL2 on a R9600 with AA at 4x and that's absolutely enough for a 17 inch monitor at 1024x768 :)
But I can't imagine playing HL2 on anything slower than an AthlonXP 2000+.

AA rapes your computer. 2XAA WILL give a big performance decrease on systems with RAM less than 1024MB. Higher = Worse.

i have everything on high and i hav 768 ram it runs pretty good

lol a amd 64 4000 on a geforce 4 mx now thats a hardcore pc

Not really, AA does not increase RAM usage, only video RAM. Sure, if there's not enough video RAM on your graphic card (ie. on 64MB boards) it will use the main RAM.

How does AA work? When you run the game in 1024x768, the screen is rendered in 1600x1280 (example res.) and then rescaled to 1024x768.
Only the old Voodoo 5 used a different technique with it's T-Buffer.
Also, Radeon 9600/9800/Xyyy (don't know about nVidia cards) support temporal AA - when you have lots of fps without AA (like 100fps), you can use it. It has a lower performance hit because it antialiases every second pixel every second frame (like do AA for uneven pixels this frame, do AA for even pixels on the second frame). 60fps minimum is required for it to work, because otherwise you'd notice it working :P

Man guys...

I have a laptop with a Pentium M 1.6 GHZ, and a Radeon 9000 Mobile (yes, a Radeon 9000 mobile), and a gig of ram, and I can play HL2 with everything on high (with MAYBE the exception of texture quality, which I have on medium most of the time) just fine, with a good framerate. Even if large firefights it doesn't really slow down.

Maybe you guys aren't keeping your pc's clean enough, not enough memory available, etc...? Maybe my laptop is just of exceptional build quality. I do find however that HL2 is one of the best running games that I have, in comparison to say, F.E.A.R. (which hardly runs at all).

actually its 2.2 ghz p4, 1 gig ddr, stupid i845 chipset~reason I dont have better card :sniper: --> i845

Why? The only disadvantage of using a 64bit Sempron instead of an Athlon 64 is the inability to upgrade to a better processor in the future (like A64 X2). But this also isn't too true, because in 2006 AMD will introduce a new socket M2 for its processors and socket 939 will become low/mid-end.
Still, using a Socket 754 mainboard you can upgrade to a socket 754 version of Athlon 64, but I think they are expensive now.
I've seen benchmarks of the new 64-bit versions of Semprons and they are very close to Athlon64's performance. And they overclock nice :)

semprons have a lower cache and fsb
 
Cache size in AMD processors doesn't have a big impact on performance and as I said - they overclock good ;)

An example benchmark of Sempron 3400+ compared to Athlon64 3000+:

Because they should be - lower is better (less time to finish task). The first graph shows the time of a huge ZIP compression.

That's a lie. I have a 6600GT, with a gig of RAM. I run with all high around 25/30 FPS.
