Hackers/Source Leak Scapegoat?

Have any of you stopped to consider...

HL2 came out of nowhere... sure it was in production but noone seen or heard anything about it until E3. Their #1 competitor (Doom3) was riding high on the PR wave when HL2 stole the show and became the talk of the town. Don't you think it is odd that other than the E3 video we have not seen or heard anything HL2 related even though it has become an overnight phenomenon.

What if all of this is a huge PR move. What if April 2004 was the planned release date anyways and they released a date of 09/2003 to scare off the Doom3 guys and get an early jump on the hype.

Did you notice after the HL2 demo at E3 ID announced Doom3 was delayed?

I truly think VALVe had no intention on releasing HL2 this year but instead played the PR game at the fans expense.

Steam sure did get popular since everyone thought 9/03 was the release and they were required to get Steam for HL2. Coincendence that we are all beta testing steam now

At one time I actually thought I would be playing HL2 by 09/03 then holidays 2003... 2004 just seems so far away. I feel like we were tricked

Honestly the way this whole thing has been handled... leak, no benchmark, no information, Steam, and false statements when they speak sentances.. I wouldn't doubt it if HL2 itself turns out to be all hype. Can you imagine HL2 being delivered in a playable format? That thought no longer exists in my mind.. what a mess :flame:

What other games are being released by vivendi people during this time frame? because.. if HL2 came out 9/30 .. i'm preetty sure no one would have bought any other games from any one for a while

That is an interesting theory Edge, and one a few friends and I also considered.

What makes me think that it may not be the case is the sheer amount of information released in the source leak - including licensed code.
(I have not read through the code, only read what others who have have said about it).
A Beta leak, or early Valve source code leak I could understand, but the inclusion of costly 3rd party software is what makes me unsure.


I am still undecided, but I certainly think there is more to the delay & leak than we are being told.


Leak or no, I feel pretty sure that the Septmeber 30th date would have been missed. And if you believe what Fragmaster (and others) said, Valve/Vivenda have known they couldn't make the 30/9 date for a looong time.

As far as all these delays go, it has not yet been confirmed, the publisher annouced it, not the developer. The publisher doesn't do any coding so they don't know shit. Also, this should be in the rumors area as you are simply going on speculation, there is no evidance in your post.

Thanks for the correction.. I didn't catch that one.

Publisher == person who fronts the cash to make the discs. If they don't publish the game it can't come out.. so if VU says it is delayed on CNN.com then guess what folks... IT IS DELAYED.

Remember they said it was delayed last time well before VALVe said anything... see a trend?

ok let me break it down since some of you are having a difficult time grasping the point of this thread..

HALF-LIFE2 is DELAYED till 2004.

Do you find it supsicious that HACKERS are BEING BLAMED?

Isn't in VALVe's best interest to find a SCAPEGOAT instead of fessing up that this was a PR STUNT and the game is not even done?

And hasn't their (Valve's) PR stunt worked wonderfully? I mean, you couldn't buy better publicity than Half Life 2 is getting nowadays. Though many of us are ticked off by the delay (again), we'll all still buy it, except perhaps those that were only ever going to download it anyway.

HL2 publishing house Vivendi, which is a publicly traded company, can't play 'games' like you are proposing on the stock market or they would get sued to kingdom come.

I can't see any reason, why Vivendi would not have wanted to get the game out to market and boost their Q4 profits and pump up their stock price. They would have been insane not to want to do it, and act criminally if they did all this as a publicity stunt, as you suggest.

Get out more and stop thinking everything is a conspiracy. Sometimes the truth is weirder than fiction, but truth nevertheless.

HL2 source code (or part of it) got stolen and published on the web. All sorts of contractual, legal, criminal and coding problems blew up on Vivendi's / Valve's faces. Game is delayed. That's the most likely truth to the matter.

Let's move on from the silly 12-year old conspiracy theories, shall we.
