Some questions remain unanswered about what really happened in Half Life, and i would like to know if they are going to be answered in Half life 2.

I know that Valve isn't going to spoil anything about the storyline in Half Life 2, but i'm not asking the answers, i'm just asking if the answers will be given.

This questions are:

- What were they studing in Black Mesa? (i've read over the internet some stuff about teleporting, but in the game they never mentioned it)

- What are the yellow crystals and why they're important? (i've also read that this crystals have some properties that relates them with teleporting stuff, but again they never mention that in the game)

- If those crystals come from Xen, how did they get them? (Remember that is one of those crystals what you use in the experiment that screws all up, and the scientists talk about other samples. The teleporting stuff seems to fit here)

- What exactly happened at the experiment?, Why Xen aliens were teleported to earth? Killing Nihilanth ended the portal, so it seems that he opened it, but there is no confirmation of this, nor we know his intentions for doing it.

- Who was Nihilanth, and why killing him allowed to take control of Xen world?.

- How is Nihilanth related with the crystals? (remember that you had to destroy 3 of them before killing him)

- Who are Xen aliens anyway and why so much interest in controlling their world?

In order of asking:

1. No one here has a security classification high enough to answer that.

2. It was not really "Crystals" they were yellow ice same place you get yellow snow from.

3. See #2

4. They like yellow crystals.

5. He was in control of Xen. Kill the leader and you become the leader.

6. He was a cousin.

7. We are America. We have to influence any sentinent life at all cost.

I am NEVER going to look at those yellow crystals the same way again ;(

nice one Aknot

1) if you replay the game you pick up on un-said things, such as piecing bits together, then working out what it cud b (getting the teleport gun also helps ;))
2) No idea. Don't know what u mean.
3) Probs teleported.
4) The experiment caused a resonance cascade, making the two planets (earth and xen) merge, like two parallel universes, and that made the aliens appear. They came thru into our world.
5) He was the boss, head honcho, he controlled the aliens (you see mini controllers) and also there's slaves, those zappy aliens ;) he controls them too.
So killing him means aliens arent controlled. We win.
6) Ahhh those crystals were just basically recharging things, i think. Like something else to do to beat him :) cud b wrong tho.
7) It's said that headcrabs/gonarchs are different aliens and they're controlled by controllers and nihilanth. The vortigaunts are slaves (the zappy things).

Hope i got that fairly right and it helped :)

xen aliens teleported to earth because they played doom 2 and thought it was a good idea

In HL:BS they mention teleportation a bit, and in the Lamda Labs they mention teleportation as well.
Nihilanth prolly attacked partly as self-defense. We know that humans had visited Xen prior to the Resonance Cascade, and that they had captured both intelligent and non-intelligent creatures from Xen (Questionable Ethics), so Nihilanth had a motive to fight back.

"Hey, it's good enough for them, it's good enough for us!"

hmmm .. googling "resonance cascade" used to give an article that explains what all this resonance cascade stuff means (explains about teleportation and the crystal etc ..) don't know where it's gone thu :(

I think the title was "what the hell is a resonance cascade" or something.

EDIT
It's right here:
