not really. it's gonna follow the same path of daikatana if they don't get their act together. Half life 2 has the best expectations from pretty much all aspects. and it's just not adding up to be so great now. People are gonna expect too much and not get it. in other words DAIKATANA :(

What are you doing here then?

Maybe the pessimist valved ray got some hope after all

Valved, do you know what made Daikatana suck so bad?

It was a combination of things, it wasn't just the graphics. So how the hell do you know HL2 sucks in all categories?

Oh, that's right, you've seen screenshots......................................

Damn, I'm aggressive today.. ?

Don't feed the troll, he will just throw out more interjecting garble, that is entirely biased and without reason.

myeah, he will start using gabes weight as an excuse soon.

How come IGN says: incredible detail, stunning etc. ( along with 6 other reviews)

Then GameSpot says, quote: "We're no closer to having a sense of whether Half-Life 2 will live up to the legendary status of its predecessor, and we're no closer to knowing how, exactly, the game will pan out."

So they're not even saying the games, bad, just saying they can't really tel what it will be like in the short time they played the game, and everyone is like: Wtf! Omg, GS sez HL2 is teh sux0r!!!2211

Calm down people, the damn Beta leak looks better than Far Cry if you set it up right...

Use the correct shader.dll, enable HDR.

I would have to agree that i dont think farcry looks so good unless you have a great video card, and then you just get pretty water, whoopty frickin' doo! HL2 is not the all time best in graphics, but i dont think they are aiming to be. We will see the new videos, they are always a better judge, and i dont care much for graphics right now, im so poor and have a lower end machine so its not gonna look great with a capital G anyway.

I went with option 1 because of subtlety. HL2's focus is not on graphics so, as a result, they are not as overblown as in other games. Hightlights are simple and used extensively only where needed, like on polished metal and eyes.
Look around you right now. There aren't pure-black shadows and white gleams coming off everything. There are subtle variations on textures. Those are what create most visual cues.
For texture art, I'd say STALKER is best. For bumpmaps, I'd say Doom 3.
For a well balanced combination of both, it's Half-life 2, hands down.

The gameplay-integrated physics system is what's really important though.

I explained why Gamespot thought differently in this post http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showpost.php?p=436325&postcount=56 ;)

Looks are only so important. HL1 wasn't popular because of it's graphics....it was just simply a great game all around.

I have always held that HL2 would be similar: graphics good but nothing outstanding...but gameplay and plot rule the day.

I don't really care if Doom3 and Stalker have the best graphics in history...eventually while playing it will get old and boring once the "newness" wears off. If the story blows and it's just about killing everything that moves, than it's not going to hold my interest for long.

Same as a hot girlfriend...if she is hot AND smart AND interesting, than you have a winner. But, I'm sorry, if she is hot but can barely speak sentences and has the IQ of a tennis ball....it DOES get old (speaking as someone over 35 here). Looking at something beautiful in a game is good for only so long.....if that's all there is to it than it's simply not that good....and it shows how lacking the game is. That's one thing with id which has always bugged me. Carmack...God of programming...but the games don't have much more than a "look". At first that was fine and dandy because it was new and people bought into that, but now people are clearly much more into MORE than just the look of a game.

Now..i will say...if HL2 doesn't come up with a good story and the graphics are so-so by today's standards...well that will be another story.

Yeah see, that's how video cards work. Of course it isn't gonna look so good with a crappy video card. That's any of the newer games.

HL2 graphics are not par with current generation games like Far Cry, if you read answer to one of the questions in "Info from Valve forum", Rick admit that they use sprites for rendering grass not polygons, in Far Cry this is not the case, you can even see individual grass casting shadows even on your gun in real time at max settings. HL1 doesn't suffer because of its under par graphics compared to Quake 2, which was already released, it was incredible because it took interactive storytelling to new heights, hoping that HL2 will take it to new levels. In terms of graphics quality there is no harm in accepting that it is not THE best. Unfortunately for HL2 Valve put emphasis on Source engine, DirectX 9 rendering that raises expectations too much.

no, those new screenshots just gave me a really bad impression of the game.

if you base yourself on SCREENSHOTS, to get an "impression" of the game, and then you go breaking a game of, based on that "impression" you got of the game, by looking at SCREENSHOTS!

well, then youre just stupid :s

spend your time otherwise

..FC's grass is sprite based. As are most of the other brushes; you don't have to have polygons to cast shadows.

in motion i like how it looks alot

i like the water , animations, dx9/hdr effects, skin+eyes better than farcry.

but gfx dont matter this is halflife. its about the "O MY GOD" moments in the actualy gameplay.

when i bought far cry, i played it for one week then got rid of it.. the graphics are amazing but the gameplay gets boring after a while.. so then ever since i play tfc :P

I'm bored of Far Cry too, but i'm holding on to it until HL2's release so i can trade it for some money off :D

I also played far cry once. I never want to play it again.

Ever.

we should ask the following question:

How much power HALFLIFE2 game is using when run on ATIs cards ?

I bet with $100 that HL2 is only taking %45 of the total power. :(

ah whetever, E3 E3 E3.

you guys need to understand that these new pics are from the same batch as the magazine pics. high quality screens look like crap when printed in magazines. lower quality pics look much better on a printed page. this is why this new media isnt upto par with what we have seen of the game. just relax and wait a few more days for the e3 stuff and prepare to be floored.

I know that.

valve got the chance to change the future of their game by putting more details . Otherwise HL2 life won't last more than 2 years.

I am not against the game, I love this game and to be truthful we shouldn't make judgments right now till the E3 in 1.8 days.

err..What's the meaning of delaying the game and always trying to make it better..It has to come out someday and it better come when Valve thinks it's done. Or do you think it should be re-done every time some other game actually comes out and looks better than the current HL2 beta-leak? There is always a way to make look everything just a little more amazing. And the game is looking fine from the recent photos and everything is there to make it the best game ever.

Well, this all depends on your idea of good graphics. Personally my concept of good graphics is realism. Which game looks the most real out of Half-Life 2, Doom 3, Far-Cry?

I think you can guess which game I think looks the best :)
