When i start the game it's fine, stutter free, but then after playing for about 10 minutes i start to experience what feels like lag. I will turn or something and it will be really slow for half a second and then turns normal again, and this keeps happening and gets really annoying. It didn't used to do this and i have no idea why it is doing it now. I turn off all other programs while running, and i have plenty of system resources. could anybody perhaps point me to what my problem may be?

Thanks!

Check for driver updates for your Soundcard too, that could be the cause of the stuttering.

Really.

Same problem

I'm now having this exact same problem after installing ATI catalyst 5.2 drivers. Tried turning everything down to lowest (all low, no aa and bilinear), still same problem. I'm running a 3.0 prescott at 3.4ghz with a 9800xt 256 and a gb of ddr500. No other games seem affected.

Either the new HL2 patch or these catalyst drivers are messing things up. Are you running an ATI card by any chance? And if so, which version of catalyst?

Obviously, the Combine has comprimised your PC in an attempt to stop you. Burn your PC, soak the ashes in Holy Water, and buy a new one.

it's a new PC so i do not think it that is the problem. I do thank you for the little help you gave :-/

Check your memory. If you dont have enough, or if you have a memory leak somewhere. Seems like either it's a memory leak, or you dont have enough memory and it's starting to churn through virtual memory, which has to be accessed from the hard drive and loads much slower.

Maybe one of your fans is going out and you're overheating. Are your temps okay?

Exactly the same here! Only my specs are:
P4 3Ghz 1Mg L2 Cache
ASUS A9600XT 128Mgs
ASUS P4C800 DELUXE 1G DDR 400
2x Seagate Baracuda 120G 7200rpms 8Mg Cache
Win XP SP2 DX9c

and the problem only hapens since Cats 5.2, if i change back to 5.1 every thing guets to normal, i tried lowering the agp aperture to 64Mgs and it got mutch beter in CSS but in HL2 is stil bad.
I think it may be a memory leak, but if so, wath is the cause? The 5.2 cats or the HL2 update? HELP!!!!! :(

Dont' double post.

Try basic maintence on you computer like :defrag, you a program called "Crap Cleaner" to clean out yout regestry, make sure you have suffienct ram, make sure you have all updated drivers for you motherboard/graphics card/sound card.

Sounds to me like the problem is with the Catalyst 5.2 drivers. It's rare that you get a huge performance increase with ATi's drivers, so unless you're having a compatibilty issue, you might as well go back to a more stable version, like 4.11 (I think).

Sorry for the double post, it was unintentional :stare:

As for basic maintence, i follow www.tweakguides.com´s XPTC to the maximum and, YES, i allways get the latest drivers i possibly can, so, comme on! There has to be something with these drivers (cats 5.2, 5.3) or the HL2 engine or both! And shure it isnt my specs, i have look in other foruns and people with higher specs are having the same exact problem. So mutch for Valve and ATI :( :( :(

I know the problem.

It most likely has something to do with your heating. Once the drivers find that your card is over heating, it will slow down the processes being, well, processed by the card. Thus you will get a slower game.

No Overheating!

Not a chance! :borg: I monitor temps in mi system all the time, both cpu and graphics with asus smartdoctor and atitool so, no chance of overheating!!!!

Yesterday, i run a lot of tests in varius games (UT2K4, Riddick, FarCry) some of this are quite hardware intensive and no problems and no overheating. I also benchmark with 3dmark05 and got a score of more 200 marks than with any previous release
of catalyst drivers, it was insane :rolling: !!!!!!
One thing it did helped, but just in CSS was, that, i lowered the agp aperture to 64Mgs and palying got a lot smoother but just in CSS. I´m starting to believe that the problem is with HL2 code and the more i test the more get to this sad conclusion! :bonce:
