A lot of people are talking about how they don't like Half-Life 2 or it isn't what the expected. Although a lot of this is because of comparison to the e3 videos, I believe some people are disappointed in Half-Life 2 because it is nothing like the first game. Seeing posts like where's the xen levels, what happened the weapons, ect. Imagine there was no Half-Life 1, more people would probably appreciate Half-Life 2 for what it is...
Now to the comparison...
What are your thoughts on this game in comparison to Half-Life 1. The release of Half-Life 2 felt odd, it was a good game. But it felt odd, for lack of words to describe it. I mean if you look back at Half-Life 1 the community became huge. I liked how when you bought Half-Life 1 it said it came with all these games, TFC + HL DM, later TFC + HLDM + RICOCHET + more. Speaking of which did anyone ever get the Half-Life release with the western game? I thought I remember there being an included western mod. Anyway it felt like the game could go on forever (6 years). But now that Half-Life 2 has been released there is only CS: Source. I thought it would have been cool, although most likely not possible, if there was a HL2 DM + TF2.
Plus when you play Half-Life 2 it just gives you a completely different feeling then Half-Life 1. What I liked about Half-Life 1 was that game took place inside one huge facility! Half-Life 2's levels were also good but for some reason I just felt like it was more fun playing in one place rather than connected areas.
On to the multiplayer aspect. For example Half-Life 1 it was easy to image playing levels multiplayer levels in black mesa, in fact I think there were similar made mp levels out there. However with Half-Life 2, I can't really imagine myself playing city 17, citidell, or h17 in mp. I don't think the textures are "multiplayer material". All of valves corresponding multiplayers felt like they all had a piece of hl in them, tfc... ect.
On to what made Half-Life 1 what it is today. The community was big when Half-Life came out TFC was awesome and HLDM rocked the big one... Counter-strike was introduced - that carried unique feeling of it's own, it no longer felt like you were playing half-life. The community was great it grew pretty large. It was made up of mostly 18+ year olds, but it did contain a few kids and teens at the time but it seemed like most of them tried to act mature... CS hits retail - 1 1/2 years later - everyone is playing is even kids scene consists of everyone.
Now to compare this to Half-Life 2 the question is whether or not Half-Life 2's multiplayer community will grow huge or not. I believe if they released TF2 in the next few months they could have a big community but I can't really answer that question... Counter-Strike was good since it was made by the community but now it is part of valve even the original creators...
When Valve released the "final" version of counter-strike: source, it was pretty horrible. In my opinion the makers of Counter-Strike do not belong in Valve... The release of Counter-Strike: Source would have been impressive if it was considered a community mod. But the game seems to lack the professionalism that Valve has.
That is were I would like to ask do you think Half-Life 2 is going to last as long as Half-Life 1, did?
I know the full SDK isn't out yet but in order have a community valve needs to support it too. From the looks of it there hasn't been any efforts to support the mp community. Although Half-Life 2 was just released I feel that they need to release a mp game like HL2DM within 1 month of the release or it makes the game seem pretty weak being made up of all homegrown mods, there should be a few official ones in there, I don't count CS:S.
