In the original Half-Life, the only complain I had was the fact you could shoot a Grunt, Special Forces, basically any human in the head and sometimes they would live. Did this have anything to do with the hit box system or was it intended as so? And will Half-Life 2 change this??

It did in fact do a lot more damage when you shot them in the head, it just doesnt always kill them. I say it was for gameplay reasons, and as things seem to be, the gameplay of HL2 will be almost exactly like the first one's.

A magnum headshot was instant kill, if I remember correctly. Crossbow too.

Yeah, that's the only 2 weapons I ever used. I hated it when I shot somebody 3 times in the head only for them to shoot back. So I started to only use the Magnum/Shotgun and occasionally the Cross-Bow

It seems like that in HL2 is takes less shots to take down a combine soldier, atleast that's how it seems when you look at last year's E3 video.
MP5 was a bit underpowered in HL imho, took too many damn shots to kill a grunt (but it was very effective against vortigaunts) but my primary weapon was the secondary fire of the shotgun, and if I had enough ammo the .357 :)

i always thought that since the grunts had helmets they could absorb some head shots by some weapons, like the glock and mp5

I agree with the underpowered part, but I found that it sucked versus the vorts. They'd usually be able to fire a good shot or two at you in the time it took to finish them.
I try to dodge them until they try to claw you, then a good couple shotgun hits are all it takes. If dodging wasn't an issue, then I magnum'd them.

The mp5 was a great "default" weapon, useful at all ranges, plus the grenade against super-threats. In most cases though, the pistol was far better at killing faraway dudes, and the shotgun was way better close-up.
To me, the shotgun is a melee weapon. :P

I don't know about the soldiers, but the gunship, as opposed to the HL1 helicopter, looks like it can killed with standard rounds. Why else would Gordon try to shotgun it, and MP7 it? I consider that a great improvement.

I sure hope they've made the damage a bit more realistic. I'm aware that the game isn't exactly geared towards realism but it's really lame to have FPS still stuck in the Quake days of damage modeling/hitboxes. I don't want the combine to be like the marine grunts in Half-Life, taking 15-20 shots of the Mp5 with NO reaction at all except some blood splats.

well there are still helicopters in hl2...but is the alien gunship like a living entity or something b/c the first vid i saw with it (barricade) i thought it was a freaking flying shooting manatee

People are pretty sure that it's bio-mechanical. So it's like a cyborg freaking flying shooting manatee.

They'd have to be deflections, even a Mp5 round/Glock round would penetrate a helmet (A standard issue one anyways) at some pretty steep angles.

well then again now that i think about it some grunts didn't even have helmets just hats...man those military hats must be made of some durable stuff

I'm playing through Half-Life again and this issue just came up last night. I emptied a full MP5 clip into a grunts head and nothing. It deflected all the shots. But HL2 is alot further along the way than HL1 was so I'm certain it won't be an issue.

thats an odd sig....

Anways the realism doesn't really bother me with regards the number of shots required to drop some combine serf. As long as they find it as hard to kill me as i find it to kill them i shall be a happy bunny.

Of course if i have to shoot an entire clip into someone to kill them and thus constantly run out of ammo for such an arbitary reason then i would be pissed, but i think we shall be ok.

i liked how the mp5 turned into an m16 when you installed the blueshift hidefinition pack ;x

It turned into an m4a1 (smaller version of an m16) actually. It didn't really make sense though cos it still did the same amount of damage :/

When you guys emptied an entire mp5 clip into a grunt, how far away were you? Because the bullets randomly spread you know.

P.S I hope HL2 doesn't try to be like that pathetic mod, CS. HL is supposed to be adrenaline pumping action!

i don't think we have anything to worry about...have you SEEN the strider video!

In HL1 it really sucked at hard difficulty setting when you could easily shoot two mags from mp5 at marines and finding them killing you with just few bursts. I usually tried to use only magnum though and beretta was really worth only for the headcraps..craps as they were :P This usually let to some impressive running :D

Remember, the marines were wearing PCVs... as for headshots; I wonder how tough an infantry helmet is in real life...

The infantry helmets IRL are not for dodging bullets :D The use of helmets is for flying debris, rocks, wood and stuff alike..And in case you fall thus preventing from brain damage. Wasn't Gordon wearing a PCV also ?

Gordon wears a Hazard Suit. Shepherd wore a PCV.

You guys are forgetting that the marines were wearing those body armor suites similar to the HEV. For those of you that played OP4 you should remember that. So it's really not surprising that it took so much to kill them. I was usually able to kill the vorts in about4 hits with the MP5, not to hard.

errr..If the suit is the same how come freemans HEV only take few rounds and not tens like them? (Obviously this is just a game but..)
Don't actually know what you're referring to as vort there..but it depends on which difficulty setting you choose..you can't get anything dead by just 4 ammos from mp5 at hard.

:sniper: :p :sniper: :) :sniper:  :sniper:  :sniper:

I'm sure it'll be different in HL2 considering how most games now accomodate headshot insta-kill systems. I'm sure it'll be similar in HL2 because of how Valve has boasted about the realism

Vort = Vortigaunt = Alien Slave = Hunchbacked Gangly Brown Fellow With Three Arms That Shoots Lightning
