half life, half a screen

I found half life for the computer the other day and started to play it and the menu and everything shows the whole screen, but when i actually go into new game and start a game, or the tutorial thing then it only shows the top half of the screen and the bottom half is black, so i can't see the health bar or whatever else is supposed to be on the bottom half. Why is this happening? Is it the game or my computer? and can I fix it?

Have you changed the resolution of the game to fit your monitor?

no, i havent tried that yet...how do I do that? and would that be it though? because it's just when i'm playing the game that it does that, not when it's on the menu

Well since i've no other clue of what could be happening, i'll just do what everybody else does and ask if it's pirated.

even IF it's using a higher/smaller resolution, it would still use up the entire screen, just less.... resolutioney.

AND, did you perhaps d-load off a website for free?

no, it's not pirated or downloaded or anything, i think my dad found them in the loft, he must have bought them ages ago. There's 3 disks, Half Life, Counter Strike and Half Life: Opposing Force, which is apparently an expansion pack or something. I tried playing both Half life and Half Life: Opposing Force and they both do the same thing with the screen.
