I just bought hl2 and would like to play a lan game at home with my kid, is this possible? or do i have to have an additional cdkey and if so are there any ways around it.
Thanks any info would be greatly appreciated.

Half Life 2 doesn't have coop, you will have to wait for SVEN coop.(mod)
But you can play CSS which comes with HL2, and yuo can play HL2DM, but for each person you will need a steam id/CD key.

Yeah precisely what the above post says. You can play HL2DM and CSS offline with him. Only bots available with CSS though, so that would be the most fun for you two. But as many other parents have asked before, theres no way of playing a co-operative mode of HL2 'as of yet'.

But as NSF also mentioned a modification called 'sven co-op' is being made, progress seems to be pretty good, where you will be able to play Halflife 2 missions with other people, either online or LAN in your case. Other maps will be made as well with objectives im sure. If you have the original Halflife you can download sven co-op and try that out see what its like (http://www.svencoop.com/)
You can also find some info on that site about the new sven coop for halflife 2. Its really good, so hang on in there.

What kind of LAN are you talking about?
DM?, COOP?, CSS?
