did valve ever get this far with the release of HL2 last year before the code was stolen?

games only go gold once, when it goes gold that means everyone agrees that the game is finished and ready to be sold

Gold means it's done. If it's done it's released. So no, they didn't go gold last year.

thanks, a jackass friend of mine who manages an EBGames was trying to tell me that the release date still isn't firm cuz they supposedly went gold last year and it was rescinded... I didn't think so but wanted some confirmation.

less than a month to go, I'm excited

Maybe he was talking about CS:CZ. That supposedly went gold but wasn't released for a while.

Now, they wouldn't be able to change anything. Even if the entire sourcecode gets stolen and whatnot, the process has begun, retailers are ready, publisher is making copies of disks, etc. It would just be too expensive to abort it all and make any changes now, so pretty much nothing could stop it now.

You obviously don't know Valve then ;)

the only delay possible right now is if Vivendi decides to hold the game back for that 6 months they are allowed to under the contract with Valve. I doubt that will happen though because i dont think Vivendi is that dumb. ;)

They said themselves that they are targgeting a november release date, they want money(not saying they need money). So they release it and then they get money.

Us fans do relize that holding out for 6 months will do shit to valve, and then more people will simply cancel there preorder and buy it off steam just to screw vivendi, or becuz they know they can play Cs:S right away. So when it comes down to it, the longer vivendi waits the less money HL2 will drag in for them and the more for valve. Holding out for 6 months wont make valve give into any court case. Vivendi relizes that.

Gold means its done and the copy is sent to create the master cd used to press all the copies.
(not entirely sure where the expression comes from if anyone can fill me in, perhaps the master cd is made from gold or something).

Anyway the only way to stop it now is probebly an alien invasion/ww3 :)

The Master CD is basically a CD-R, which in the times of yore were a very distinct gold color. If anyone has a CD-R from several years ago you know what I'm talking about.

Um, no. The master CD is a very special, high-quality perfect copy of the media which is used to create Silver masters. The silver masters are then put into the pressing machines which stamp out the production CDs.

Commercial CDs are nothing like CDRs at all - CDRs use a special dye that can be made non-reflective to simulate a 1, whereas a 1 in a commercial CD is created by a physical bump on the surface which directs the laser beam away from the detector, thus registering as a 1. This is because commercial CDs are stamped out like cookies, whereas CDRs are obviously 'burnt'.

Now all we need now is to find the car/truck/plane which is carrying the CD to the CD presses and steal it!

Let the hunt begin!

no stealing, stealing is bad, just borrow it for a quick install/copy and give it right back

It would be very cool if there was a news report on it:
"'Gold' CD crossing America: it must be stopped at all costs! If you see it, DO approach it!"

Of course they'd have to show some photofits of Gabe and co as well ;)
