having ambient light throughout?

i tried the light_environment. having both brightness and ambient set to high amounts. but the problem is, light is only emitted from the skybox, so my interiors are still pitch black. isn't there a way to make a general ambient brightness throughout the map, so that my shadows are pitch black?
 
thanks a bundle. i wonder why its not in there by default

edit: ugh, its weird, everythings super bright, even at 5, but my skybox is super dark
 
It is in the custom FGD down in my signature. ;)

The value is a float from 0.0 (darkness) to 2.0 (fullbright).
 
ahhh cool. so that gives everything ambient light but doors on my map. but then doors have a minimum light level variable, so then thats probably also using 0.0 - 2.0? well ill check it out
 
Most visible entities have their own minimum light level that no doubt overrides the world's.
