Yes, I have a problem.

I moved house recently. I'm living in one of my parent's bedsits (they own a B&B + block of flats), this bedsit doesn't have a phone line, thus I have no Internet on my PC.
Imagin my suprise when, after all this time of waiting patiently, and spending £34.99 (which is the most I have ever paid for a game, ever), I get it home and install it to find Steam jumping in my face. It demands that I create an account, but it can't do that without Internet, so it wont let me play HL2.
Oh, I was happy. My new game wont let me play it, period.
Like my comment is gonna change anything, I just can't believe it. I've bought a new game, and I can't play it! Not even offline single player! Words can't describe how angry I am. No wonder Vivendi took Valve to court over Steam, I wish I could to. Steam is a bloody stupid idea, it's no better at Anti Piracy than the average CD Key on a box, but it makes it a hell of a lot harder to play a legally bought game, in my case it makes it impossible to play a legally bought game.
I think I am the first person ever to say "Half Life 2 will be gathering dust on my shelf for a while", as much as I hate to say it, I'm afraid Steam has forced me to.
I still can't describe how angry I am here. How can you have the gaul to add a bit of software to your game that wont let your paying customers play it?

It should say on the box internet connection required..or words to that effect??

I've heard European versions tell you inside that an internet connection is required. In USA it says on minimum requirements on outside of box.

It's on the European box too. Internet and DVD Rom Drive required. The retailer should point it out though really, especially since returning it is going to be pretty much impossible. Sooner of later someone's going to find a way of bypassing Steam though I guess.
£35 seems like a lot too, you can get it places like gameplay.com for about £27.

I was contemplating that problem too, but I got a connection in time. One solution is to find a crack (way to go Valve) for the activation. It shouldn't take long until it's made.

Steam is Valves weapon against piracy (amongst other things), and it is better than what’s out there today. I'm sure some one will eventually find a way around activation for HL2 if they have not already, but the minute they do Valve will know about it, and after figuring out what the crack does, will release a small update to render that crack invalid. Since Steam is required to play the game, everyone will end up downloading the update. Of course the pirates will respond by releasing new cracks, but Valve can always fight back. It is a deterrent. I’m sorry to sound cold LukeMRH, I know how much it must suck not to be able to play HL2, but you’re in a very small minority. Valves existing base is comprised of people who pretty much all have a connection of some sort.
