Help!!

Just bought HL2 GotYE, installed it, registered it on steam, downloaded the updates they offer, but when i try to launch any of the half life programs they wont run. All i get is the launching window come up, it thinks for a bit and then it closes and then it goes back to the way it was before. Searched the steam website to see if anyone has reported something like this but if they did i didnt notice it.

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me with this. Im waiting for a email from steam or valve to come back but who knows when and if ill hear from them.

So you tried restarting the computer, right?

What are your system specifications? (Tutorial can be found here: Link)

yeah, tried restarting quite a few times, uninstalled then reinstalled.
Im running a P4 3.4GHz 2MB Cache, 2Gb DDR Ram, ATI Radeon 9550 256MB graphics.

unless im being completely stupid i cant see what the problem is. Put the cd in, say yes to install, let it install, register, download the updates.

Ive tried running it from the cd, the shortcuts, the steam program.

I was wondering if Norton Antivirus may have been causing some problems with it. When i restarted it kept saying that HL2.exe was trying to access the net which i selected the option of letting it do that.

Also i understand that there is an offline option but i havent seen anything indicating that i can do this or offering it to me.

Is the game updating?
Left-click Steam tray icon
Select "Games"
Select "My Games" tab

Is the status of Half-Life 2 100%?

If yes, right-click on "Half-Life 2"
Select "Properties"
Select "Updates" tab

Is it set to "Always keep this game up to date"?

yeah, it says its 100%-ready, its set to make sure its always up to date. I get the codename gordon file to work, i know its not HL 2 but it would appear that the downloading is working properly.

not sure what else i can do unless the disc is faulty which is probably unlikely. the fact there are no error messages as well is puzzleing

still getting nothing happening. verified then restarted and still has the same problem, starts launching then the window closes and nothing happens. bloody thing!!!!

Try it again with Norton Antivirus/Firewall off.

Maybe your Firewall is preventing Steam from accessing the internet. Am not familiar with Norton I use McAfee. See if you can manually let steam access internet by way of Norton. Note Steam has to have a full access.

Good Luck.

Hi,

I've got a Win2K system with ZoneAlarm and I've DL'd the HL2 demo. I get the same thing trying to run it. Basically it starts then stops. Quite cleanly, no error messages, nothing. It just doesn't run.

I have seen similar behaviour from other programs when they need to access the net & they're not allowed to by ZA so the first thing I checked was the permissions. Steam & HL2 have full permissions. The only thing they can't do is send email.

I have tried it with ZA switched off and I still get the same behaviour.

Cheers,

Wilson Logan.

Cheers,

Looks like that you’re up for shopping again.
How long you had this computer?
OK try this first go and download updated Video driver from invidia update site here http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_81.98.html
Uninstall old driver version. Reboot.
Cancel "Found New Hardware" dialog, turn your Antivirus, Antispyware ZA Firewall and install new driver. Reboot.
Set your screen resolution to 32-bit instead of 16-bit and since your have a lower end card set the refresh rate to 800X600 and not 1024X768.
Delete HL2 demo by way of add/remove programs and deleting Steam/HL2 demo including the entire files also go to the driver Steam/HL2 demo was installed and manually delete Steam/HL2 demo folder. Reboot.
Download fresh copy of HL2 demo, install it, Disk Defrag, launch game, exit game, Reboot.
Launch game again in the video tab of the game option set screen resolution to you desktop resolution 800X600 and turn Vertical Sync Off.
Know that HL2 will look crappy but hey let’s hope it runs first.

Good luck.

According to that info from dxdiag you don't have directx 9.0c installed. I may be wrong but is this not required to run HL2 CSS etc ?

Hi Guys,

Well firstly I'd like to say a big thanks to all who helped. It was DirectX that was the problem. I installed 90c and hey presto.

Secondly I'd like to say 'Oh my God!'... this is the first game I've played since Halo (been away a while). Things have moved on a teeny bit.

Thirdly I'd like to say, what muppets beta'd this thing? They need shot through the lungs. I mean... a fatal error because they can't be arsed detecting which DirectX is on the system? I've played $10 games with better error checking.

Fourthly, can I turn this Steam shit off & choose to take updates? Is there an 'Update Game at Start (Y/N)?' switch anywhere or do I need a hack?

Cheers,

Wilson.

First off, Steam is not shit. This is open to debate, but you will be openly flogged if you are against it :p (jk ;))
Second: (I'll quote myself)
Left-click Steam tray icon
Select "Games"
Select "My Games" tab

Is the status of Half-Life 2 100%?

If yes, right-click on "Half-Life 2"
Select "Properties"
Select "Updates" tab

Is it set to "Always keep this game up to date"?
You can set it to auto-update or not in there ;)

And third, do not speak of Halo. It is a bag of soggy dicks.
