I just purchased the Orange box through steam two days ago. I installed it onto my external hard drive (only Half life series and Portal) then installed all the SDK (Source, base, and orange box sdk) then tried out hammer, loved it, went to sleep. Next day I open up hammer and go to make something for Half life 2 and to my surprise the nice neat grid in hammer now has absolutely no vertical lines, the horizontal lines are now instead dashed horizontal diagonal lines, and I can't make out anything that I make on the grid. I've tried reinstalling steam, the SDK, the Games, resetting and refreshing the SDK, I'm afraid to touch the GameInfo.txt (besides I don't know if that would be a problem), defragmenting both hard drives, formatting my entire external hard drive and then installing steam and the games all over again, but I still get the same stupid slanted lines in hammer, no matter what engine or what game I plan to map for. It's seriously pissing me off. And there so far I haven't found any documentation on this problem.

On a sidenote: Every once in a while Hammer will tell me that I am missing the Steam.dll, is there a way to remedy this?

On another sidenote: Is there any way I could possibly downgrade from the newest SDK/Hammer to an older one that might be more stable?

Whatever you can do to help, I thank you with everything I got. I love Half Life 2 and I love making maps for it and Portal, but if this keeps happening, then I just wasted 40 dollars.

why don't you see if installing on a not-portable hard drive produces the same errors?

I can't our laptop has only 2.17 gigabytes avaliable. I can't erase any of it because it's all on my mother's account. I did manage to remedy the solution, weird too, I just had to run the Source SDK Base, and Souce SDK Orange Box. I'm all happy again.
