Ok having persuaded my friend to buy the Orange Box (he's a big Halo fan) we went to Game and picked it up. When we got back we found that the Keys were already in use and Game would not refund or replace having be fooled before.
So we contacted Steam Support gave them a picture of the receipt box and key codes and they refused to give him the games without an explanation. So is there anything we can do he is really pissed off and blaming me, so please give some advice.

I forgot, when you bought the game, was it shrink wrapped, or did you get the case from the shop floor, and they put the disk inside?

And yeah, GAME is really arsy about returning PC games, but unfortuantely everybody is arsy about returning Steam related games back to store

Go back to Game, ask to speak with a manager, and explain the situation. If they still don't refund... sue sue sue!

They will if you get angry enough. The fact is that this whole thing is bullshit. Just swing into a righteous rage at the store and they'll be throwing Orange Boxes at you.

No the game was not shrink wrapped but it was behind the counter.
We will try going to Game again tomorrow, don't think it will help much as it was the manager who refused us before.
Is there any way to get an explanation on why Valve won't give him the games despite giving them all the evidence they asked for?

If it wasn't shrink wrapped, I'm pretty sure he's obligated to refund it. Especially given that the damn keys are invalid. Sounds like one of his employees has been enjoying a free Orange Box lately...

None of their games are shrink wrapped even console games. Its one the the reasons i stopped going there. The main problem is the manager hasn't got a clue about PC games and seems to believe that the key is not required.

Get a laptop, connect it to the internet, try to register the key, unplug the internet, bring it to Game and show it to him. With the code visible on-screen.

Does it show the key when it fails to register. I'll try it anyway.

What's their return policy on PC/console games? I'm pretty sure they have one and they must abide by it as long as you provide proof of purchase.

But some shops won't take return of on-line activated steam game ...

Valve should be able to reset the cd-key for you. Just contact them like this and they'll do it; they can't just refuse with no explanation:

  • Create a support account, if you don't have one.(remember: support accounts are different from forum or Steam accounts).
  • Go to any support topic.
  • Click on the Ask a Question tab.
  • Fill in the details of your problem.
  • Click on the Submit Question button.
  • Read through the automated responses, if you want to.
  • Click on the Finish Submitting Question button.

You can monitor the progress of your support tickets by clicking on the My Stuff tab and then on Questions. It takes about 3-5 working days for Steam Support to get back to you.

UPDATE: Just went back to Game and they are standing by their decision and claim that the 15 day return on the receipt doesn't count for Steam games.

That's exactly what we did and they asked for a picture of the receipt, box and key codes and that's what we provided but they refused to give him the games. He was even willing to send them the box in the post if needed. Still waiting on an explanation from Steam but i don't think we are gonna get one.He is very disappointed especially since am always going on how Valve cares for there customers unlike others companies he just feels like they don't care now they got his money.

Did it say that on the receipt that Steam games were excluded from the return policy or were you told that when you purchased the game?

Can you post what the Steam Support reply was? Also, it may be better to post about this in the Steam Users Forums, you might get attention from an administrator.

No it's doesnt say that steam games are excluded on the receipt nor did they say anything when we bought it no surprise really they know nothing about PC games.

I'll get him to forward me the reply. As for posting on the Steam Forum i'am still waiting for an Admin to register my account.

Just keep trying, dunno what the manager or Valve's problem are but by the sounds of it your doing everything fair and square about a genuine gripe, so just keep with it, go back to game and state that it does not say no returns and all that.

I have given up on Game we spent ages arguing with them but they won't budge.I only hope that Valve change their minds or tell us what to do. Another question can i let my friend share my account i know we can't play online at the same time, but would i get my account banned for sharing it.

I'm sorry to hear. I suggest doing some investigation into Game and consider filling out a grievance report of this incident and filing it to a customer help directory.

As far as sharing your account, your account can not be banned for sharing. Though be careful to what happens, because if he decides to cheat on it you're ****ed.

I don't need to worry about him cheating he despises cheaters and i know he would be careful with it.At least he can now play the games.
