since a recent update my garrys mod will have little black shapes randomly on tblack main menu making it hard to see things, and where the when i get to the game i open the little menu of objects, where the black shapes ahd been on the main menu are see through. but before the update it worked fine.

Delete your Garry's Mod folder under "C:/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/username/". Come back after you do that.

Oh really? Might be a graphics card thing? What are your specs? When was the last time you updated your drivers?

Try validating your Gmod files in the game options right clicking the game and going to properties then look for the 'validate game cache' button.

my graphics card is ,Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family (its fully updated), it did say that steam did not recognise it. But it used to work fine before the update.

What do you mean that steam doesn't recognise it? Can you post a screenshot of the message it gives you? Also follow Glenn's advice and try validating your cache files.

The update uses a more modern version of the Source engine, it's possible that your card can no longer run it.

Edit: I've just checked, apparently your graphics card supports hardware DirectX 9 so it rules out the graphics card itself being the problem. If validating doesn't help try installing the latest graphics card drivers.

all the message says it that steam does not recognise my garpahics card in there database, although i uploaded the deatils of it to them.

and i ve tryed it validating but that still dont work. i seem to be the only person with this problem.

aslo i would show u a image but i am not sure how to

nope that didnt work either ther are still black blocks in the way, to see what it looks like just look at me avatar

Could some one reply as im giving up hope on wether garrys mod will ever work again!

You said your graphics card drivers were up to date but try updating to the latest DirectX.
Try searching steam support here.
Try looking around or posting on the facepunch forums (official GMod forum) here.

Your avatar is really small and I can't tell what is going on, but it sounds like you are experiencing some graphical anomaly known as artifacting, but I can't say without looking at exactly what kind of object is being replaced by what kind of black block.

click these links to see what it looks like when i try to play GMod.

Has any one seen this before!

I can safely say the only time I have ever seen that (once) was with a failing (overheating, kicking the bucket) video card. Doesn't mean yours is failing, that's just my experience.

I use this GMod on my laptop that bought this year so its resonabily new.:|

hey i have not tried this yet but this might work

i constantly crashed everytime i acessed a server online in gmod but this might be a way

i have windows XP home edition and this might also work on vista
just follow these steps...

1. go to my computer
2. click on C:
3. click on drivers
4. click on etc
5. open hosts via notepad

then type these in:

12.0.0.1 www.garrysmod.com
12.0.0.1 stargatepack.googlecode.com

the 12.0.0.1 www.garrysmod.com code prevents gmod from acessing the website when you go online multiplayer in gmod. if it opens a connection to the website, you will crash.

another thing, the 2nd code is for people going to a server that has stargate pack in it. you will crash if it connects to the site when you are acessing the server.

i hope this helps, i dont know if this is accurate, but it might be.

let me know if this works!

cheers!!

I just noticed, have you tried not running it in a window?

it does not matter if i run it in a window or not it still buggers up, and i do not understand "robo samurai" idea.

I think it's funny he joined just to post that.

C:\drivers\etc\hosts.txt?

I dunno I think his path is incorrect.

anyone got any more ideas i'm still not able to play GMod its been AGES!!

Post your systems specs so I (we?) can review them. Try the Steampowered forums for more help as it is likely if anyone has had your problem they would have gone there, or even a Gmod forum if there is one.

That looks like artifacting, which usually means your graphics card is overheating.
graphical anomaly known as artifacting
failing (overheating, kicking the bucket) video card.
Now that he has a second opinion, let's discover if it's true.

Do you experience graphical anomolies in other games or applications? Does your laptop get adequate ventilation or do you rest it on your lap?
Is Gmod the only app that does this? If so, Gmod problem. If not, something else.

well all my other steam games work fine and i have started up my latop from cold then played Gmod and still produces the weird black marks, also how can it be a heat problem when i played Gmod before christmas and after the big update the begining of this year it begins to bugger up, sounds odd how it could cause it to over heat NOW. but thanks for trying.

Sounds like the problem is purely software related, confined to Gmod. It's possible the only solution is replacing the installation.

Does altering your graphical settings do anything?

iv changed all the Gmods graphics setting to its lowest and it still won't work, unless you mean my comps graphic card which iv changed it tis best.

Did you try these?
You said your graphics card drivers were up to date but try updating to the latest DirectX.

I cannot stress enough how the last one, looking on the facepunch forums, is you best hope. You are asking for GMod help on a forum that doesn't play GMod that much where as you could be asking for GMod help on a forum of thousands who play GMod a lot.

You might also try a cleaning of GMod.
