This is going to seem like a stupid question - but it's come up twice now.

Is it true that someone with a high ping can somehow make others on the server laggy? It doesn't make sense to me that it would, and the complainers' pings still look good. So what's the deal? Myth or truth?

I have been asked by players on the server to kick high-ping players - and I don't want to do that if this is just paranoia.

Cheers,

K.

No it doesn't make others lag, but it does make it difficult the shoot the ones with the high pings

I for one can tell you that it is all false.
A high pinger cannot make the server lag in any possible way.
Many developers have commented on it.
Infact, those with high speeds will use more bandwidth, and works the server a tad harder than those with high poing.

Now, if everyone had to be in sync then this could be considered true. In RTS's they usually have everyone be in sync. If you all in sync, everyone has to be seeing the exact same thing. This causes the worst connection to limit everyone elses. If you have ever been in a game with a lag screen type thing then those games you have to be in sync. Usually RTS's do this. Such games as starcraft and wc3 AoE series..etc...

Pretty much all FPS's do not require people to be in sync thus if someone lags he will only experince the "lag". He cannot limit the server because the server takes packets as they come, and send them back as fast as they can. For example.
Lets say you shoot at a 56ker. The 56ker on his screen had moved before you had shot him.
Now you will send a packet to the server stating that you shot him.
He will send a packet to the server saying you moved.
Lets say the high speeder had 25ping.
You had 200 ping.
He would tell the server that he shot you, 8 times faster than you tell the server that you moved. Thus resulting in the 56kers death. Even though really, he had moved and you had missed.

True 56kers also wont warp to clarify that. A 56ker gets 200 - 250 ping on average. Or near that. At those pings you can't warp. Getting in the 350's you start to. Those arn't true 56kers or 56kers at all. There are amazingly 28.8kers. Thus a 56ker has a handicap. Not by very much at all though. If you aim on a 56k you will hit there head. As a 56ker myself, I never have to aim ahead of them or anything. Because 200ping may not be able to send things to the server as fast 25 ping but, it still is insanley fast thus resuling in a smooth game, where a 56ker can aim on the target and hit the target for high speeders and low speeders.

There you go, some extra things you really don't need to know!

Thanks so much - all of you. I thought it sounded crazy, but I wasn't confident in challenging it.

Cheers, and Merry Christmas.

Yep.. just say "This game is UDP.. theres no way I can slow you down, if anything, my high ping speeds you up, noob" :D

couldnt have said it better minerel,
if the person hosting the server is a dial up user mind, then even if you have a low ping you may still lag, due to the 56kers server not sending enough info fast enough to you. ive been in a dial up server witha 70 ping but still got warps.
i tthink thats right :stare:

Should be right, good thing there really isn't anywhere near a little(meaning insanley little) 56k servers around.

I get my info, from well being a 56ker myself, and well...nearly everyone on this forum.

Most servers really do not care if your a 56ker or not. I mean seriously, for Cs:S I have not got kicked or banned once because I was a 56ker. Maybe 30 times in Cs all togeather(Counting: Cs1.4\1.5\1.6\CS:Cz\Cs:S. Also including, NS, HL2DM, HLDM). Trust me, ive been playing both for..well more than I ever should.

56K power!
