I tried downloading the Half Life 2 HiRes Character Models Pack but no matter what I do the original are the same, anyone know how to fix this?

For those of you that have succesfully done it just post what you'v done.....
I've tried using different versions, differentdownload mirrors, and saving it in different files.

Ultima and I are trying to get this working. So far we have downloaded the final version of the pack and attempted to load then by putting then in the hl2 folder of our username as such:
"Copy the complete folder "materials" with all its subfolders to <path
to SteamApps>/<username>/Half-life 2/hl2/ and overwrite the old
materials folder."
However, in my case, I did not have a previous materials folder due to the fact that I just got the game Tuesday of last week. So in essence once I get to the hl2 folder I don't know if I'm supposed to just past the materials folder or what. It may be a bit different in UltimaApocalyspe's case, but I imagine not too much different. Could someone who installed this glorious pack show us the way to install this correctly as Ultima and I are obviously stuck at the moment.
