HL-2 STEAM availability statement yet?

I'm assuming the code lock must have happend tonight, which is why Gabe felt he could make the statement. I would assume if the code IS locked, there's no reason HL-2 couldn't be pushed to ATI coupon holders via Steam.

However, I'm also aware of the other statement from Valve that said that there would be several other pushes of HL-2 content via Steam in the coming weeks. This suggests the code base ISN'T locked.

This makes me curious: will Steam users actually get a different version of HL-2 than retail buyers? I'm assuming that if there are several more content pushes to come, that these pushes must contain "later" code, otherwise why not just do one push and have it done?

So has anyone seen any statements addressing this yet?

because it spaces out the load time, the steam servers can't handle it all at once.

the code can all be locked, the game can be complete, and as Posey said, its merely a matter of bandwidth.
they upload chunks of the finished product over several weeks.

Actually, I was wondering about this. I believe, however, the bulk of the product was actually pushed earlier this week in the 1.1 gig push. If that push was the textures (and assuming the map bases), all that should be left is the actual Source and Havok engines; those alone can't be much bigger than what's already pushed.

and you forgot the sound files. but no only the textures were included in the .gcf file, you can browse it and see. no map files, just .vmf, and ,vmts

You got a good point -- I forgot about all the sound and voice acting.

However, now there's a question as to if it was really Gabe or not who posted. Apparently, the IP address is in question and come through an open proxy via a music website.

Does the drama ever end?
