We know that Valve will be working on HL3 and eventually get to play it so my question is whether HL fans would like to see this series continue as a game with more sequels

OR

Valve come up with an ending which for HL3 which would be open to a game sequel but not continued through a game..more or less continued like what Blizzard did with StarCraft.. publishing books instead.

which would u prefer, and why? :)

I want a game, not a book. I never really bought the books sadly, and I always wanted more StarCraftness. I miss that game.. :(

Plus they would make more money with a game :P

Valve has already said that the game will end on the third. A trilogy.

Sorry to kind of kill your thread there heh.

Trilogies that are fabricated as they go along tend to suck.

Don't make a trilogy just for the sake of using the term trilogy.

well...continuing the story of the HL universe through books after HL3 would only be for those very keen on everything HL related.

quite a few pple have said more HL games after a third one would ruin the "specialness" of the HL games so the next best thing for those craving for more HL stuff would be episodes through books.

hmm...i thought the book idea would be warmly recieved...apparently not i guess :o

After HL3 comes... we are either gonna play user created mods or official expansion packs.

There are stories meant to be left open and stories meant to be closed; Half-Life is meant to be closed.

Nothing ruins a good open story like closing it and nothing ruins a good closed story like leaving it open. The Matrix? Should have been closed but left open for the sake of money. Resident Evil? Should have been closed, but we'll see how RE4 turns out. Silent Hill? Left open and let's hope it stays that way. Half-Life? Better damn well have a conclusion within the next ten years.

Then again if the conclusion sucks it won't matter anyways.

If it's really planned as a trilogy (which it is) then that means HL3 is going to be the last installment!!! :( BOOHOO!!!

Its not planned as a trilogy. Doug lombardi said in PC ZONE that that rumour came from nowhere, they dotn know how many half lifes their going to make

Yeah, HL2 indicated that we're already heading towards at least a 4 game series. It seemed pretty clear that we know too little for them to suddenly wrap everything up in the next installment. Valve have never officially called HL a trilogy - it's just a term that shot up after they confirmed that there will be a HL3.

Gordon Freeman's adventures are only just beginning...
If and only if Valve can keep the standard of HL games that high, there is no reason to make the story end. We all want to know who the G-man is, but he could just be a smaller part of a bigger picture.
If they can keep us speculating, but not annoying us with continously unanswered questions.
If anyone can do it, it's Valve?

And I want a bit more than 20 hours more HL before the series is over.

I want at least a Half-Life 4.

Yeah, but seeing how much stuff we have right now, I'm wondering what kind of game we'll get. (I'm thinking storywise).

It has to be fun to play and I think VALVe will have a hard time here when it comes to designing levels as it most probably won't be as much on earth as it has been this far.

Nope its not, theres no confirmation at all of that, its just a rumour that got stirred up.

Half life is not a triolgy.

Best get that cleared up :D

Is that a rumour too? Or is it an actual fact.

Its an actual fact, doug lombardi confirmed it in PC ZONE.

I think that the moment one game gets a bad reception they will degide to do one more after that to wrap the story up and move on to a new thing.
e.g. HL23 is considered utter tat by the public so they make a HL24 when we finally find out who Gman is and why Gordon still hasn't been to the toilet and then they will stop. If however HL24 is back on frm they will make some more, perhaps following a new character.

Well PC Zone apparently asked Doug Lombari whether they would reach the September 30th 2003 date, in late July and he said something along the lines of yes it absolutely will.

Makes you wonder whether PC Zone have really spoken to Doug Lombardi at all.

Well, it was in the issue they reviewed half life 2, in which they visited valve so...

Theres scans on the net, but you wont be able to host them here, i have the mag anyway

Doug could mean "The Half-Life Trilogy" plus additional expansion packs. Just a guess.

They asked him if half life 3 was the last in the series because of the rumours, and thats what he said.

I'm pretty sure that it was genunine, and part of the whole Valve messing up before an insanely difficult ship-date routine.

You want a real reason to doubt PCZone's word - giving Unreal 2: The Awakening a rating above 90%. Makes you wonder if they played that game and weren't just sexually harrassed into it.

here is my Idea. It gives closure, but still allows for more gameplay.

Have a trilogy, and then ahve the trilogy again (all the same events) from another person's perspective, like HL 4 would be the first install ment for another caracter, showing what was happening for them, at the same time gordon was in black mesa, and then so on.

This way you could get a good 6 games out, and still have closure.

I would NEVER want a book instead of a game!! That's so gay.

I want HL3 and I want it to be the end of the story ... what I mean is I don't want something like Friday the 13th, with 10 episodes

All Rumors, stop assuming its going to end at 3, enough said

One thought I have is that if the series continues far beyond three installments, the genre is develop so much that any further sequels aren't going to feel like Half-Life - eventually, key parts of the style of HL and HL2 are going to seem anachronistic remnants of the late 90s - the plain HUD, health packs, non-interactive communication and so on.

I think it would be cool to wrap things up in the 3rd instalment of this series. It just seems right. You can have to much of a good thing & if it goes on to long then the story will get more & more ridiculous until we all get a bit miffed with it.

Saying that I think the 3rd game should be BIG. Much bigger than HL2. Maybe as big as the first game. I think it should be written around the Source2 engine, A modified version of the current engine, To include better lighting & basically everything that's there tweaked some more to make it even better. As for the story ........... We'll leave that in Valve's capable hands but it would be cool if they had some sort of HL3 suggestion's forum on the official website & then try to include some of the best ideas in the game.

If the next game wraps things up it doesn't mean it has to be the end of the HL universe. Maybe just Gordon's envolvement. A quite like the idea of bringing sheppard back for a Opp Force style mission pack centred around City 17's locations. It would be cool of this would include some of the deleted scenes from HL2.

Hg2tG is a trilogy, yet it has five parts.

Anyway, if no one knows if the HL series is going to be a triology then why have so many people come to that conclusion?

Some one's spreading rumors around, and the only person to get the right answer from, would be the writer. But anyway...

i would like to see more hl games, but not neccessarily from the point of gordon, and that dont follow too closely with what happened w/ black mesa and what not. some distant adventure that can somehow relate, but not like running into barney and kleiner.

The bloke who wrote the HL script said in an interview something about making the first part introduce the plot the second part open up more questions than answers and finally wrap it all up in the thrid part. Or words to that effect.

iam looking forward for hl3,4,5,6

no more than 6.

I think they should do 5 games, and end that series there... But I think they could easily go off and do other games linked to HL, if only by the G-Man alone.

Personally, I wonder if Team Fortress 2 won't be tied into the Half-life universe somehow...

Good point pomegranate - although they've done a nice job of updating the HUD from HL1 just enough to keep it the same but make it feel fresh - by about HL5 we'll all be laughing at how bad the Source engine graphics were and wondering why we're still battling aliens when everyone knows they only make games based in the real world now. Actually I think you probably put it better.

offtopic- but for hl3, do you think we will have to wait another six years?

No way.

Valve's networks are more secure, and the Source engine is already developed, AND they have a good pipeline system of working on things.

I estimate 3-4 years.

If I remember correctly, Gabe Newell said that HL3 should be out in about three years..
