Well I had both HL2 and CS:S on my computer last fall. Both worked absolutely fine. I unistalled steam and whatnot and I recently put it back on my computer. I'm able to play CS 1.6 fine but when I go to run HL2 or CS:S they will not open. I get the loading box then it shows in my taskbar and disappears. It's quite annoying at this point. I have updated my drivers and video card, everything is as it was in the fall. I contacted STEAM and as I expected they were of no help. The solutions they gave me did absolutely nothing. I have tried reinstalling everything over again only to come out with the same dissapointing results. I'm getting NO errors what so ever its like the game refuses to open. If anyone has an idea on what the hecks going on and could help me out it would be so helpful. I spent good money for this game, I should be able to play it. ;(

What are your system specifications?
Here is a link to a tutorial if you don't understand: Link
Just reply into this post.

PROBLEM : CS:S HL2 wont open.

SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS

OPERATING SYSTEM : Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600)
PROCESSOR : Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.53GHz
MEMORY : 1016MB RAM
VIRTUAL MEMORY: 664MB used, 627MB Available
DIRECTX VERSION : DirectX 9.0c(4.09.0000.0904)
GRAPHIC CARD : GeForce FX 5500
GRAPHIC CARD MEMORY : 128.0 MB
RESOLUTION : 1024x768 (32bit) (85Hz)
DRIVERS : 6.14.0010.8198 (Englsh)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION :
The games ran fine over the fall. I unistalled steam to open up some space but recently got the urge to play again and re-installed. I have tried unistalling and re-installing both Steam and HL2 with no luck. At the momen I have FFXI running now so the virtual memory may seem lower, not sure.

Though I don't like your CPU and GPU as they're not designed for current games, and if your game worked b4 don't mean it will work all of the time with those two (CPU & GPU) try this.

Right-click screen, Properties, Settings, Advanced, Monitor and bring down your screen refresh rate to 60Hz instead of 85Hz and also in the game bring down your resolution to 800X600 or lower along with other graphic settings of the game. Sorry but you have to make huge compromises with those two.
Update your Video driver to V. 81.98

Good Luck.

but how can he do that if he can't get in the game? is there a parameter to launch the game in safe mode or something?

rightclick on the game in "my games" list, properties, and "set Launch options", and write in there:
-width 800 -height 600
and close it, and the game shoud start in that resolution.

Thank you, I was asking on his behalf (and because I didn't know, and now I do!)

I think barney and I are having more fun with this thread than buu...
