HL2 Friends?

Hi,

i'm at work right now, so i can't play at the moment, but i did see the screenshots of the startup-screen.
Can someone explain why there is a "friends" option?
I thought there would be NO multiplayer option op hl2.
Is this a "hidden" feature or is it just so you can chat with your on-line buddies how gorgeous everything is

The Friends feature hal allways been in steam, even in single player games. The problem is, it hardly ever works :/
