HL2 installation probs

I have just got HL2 and trying to install it.

Steam installed successfully,however when i get to the game installer, the window just freezes in the first part.

When I checked processes in the windows task bar, I can see that it is the msiexec.exe service. Sometimes there are even 3 instances of it.

Can someone help please?

Download it from Steam instead of using the cd.
