NVidia started an offer to all nVidia hardware owners offering Portal: The First Slice, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, and Half-Life 2: Lost Coast for free. Right now I am downloading these all on Steam (which I have never used before), and I am wondering this: Will I be able to play Half-Life 2 mods using Half-Life 2: Deathmatch/Lost Coast or Portal: The First Slice (ie Insurgency, Hidden Source, etc.)?

Many thanks, Waldo

I don't know, HL2 Deathmatch does normally come with the Source SDK (a requirement for playing Mods) but since this is a bit different to buying it.
You can check in Steam, go to the Tools tab and see if "Source SDK Base" is available to you.

Umm, from what I can remember, I could play Multiplayer mods with deathmatch, but not singleplayer mods.

Under the "Tools" tab I see no "Source SDK Base." Is there any way I can get the SDK base free?

I haven't finished downloading HL2: DM (I had some problems earlier). Will it be available to me after I finish downloading and installing HL2: DM?

That would depend entirely on whether they use HL2 assets or not. Most single player mods and maps (like MINERVA) use Half-Life 2 assets, so they'd need Half-Life 2.

Multiplayer mods like Hidden: Source, Insurgency, and the like, are set in completely different universes, and as far as I know, they don't use any Half-Life 2 assets, so you should be able to run them.

Then you are out of luck I'm afraid, but it makes sense not to distribute the Source SDK with a free offer.
Buy one or more of these games and it will be available to you

Not true, everyone with access to the Source SDK can use the HL2 assets.

Alot of mods nowadays require Episode One or Two, anyway, which means the answer's no.

Ok, one last question. I've decided to buy Half-Life 2 via Steam, but I just want to know how well that works. The last time I tried to buy a game online (The Northern Strike booster pack for Battlefield 2142), I ended up losing $19.98 without getting anything (Why I hate EA). So, if I try to buy Half-Life 2 through Steam, will I encounter any problems (Using a credit card)?

I hope you're buying The Orange Box. There's little point in purchasing the game on its own.

I've heard no complaints about Steam's purchasing system, and there have been recent additions to it to allow more users to use it with greater ease.
