HL2 online play

When it comes to HL2 online play, the only thing I'm worried about is all of the cheating losers from CS moving over onto HL2 to ruin that game as well. As for Steam, it's about 10 times better than the old WON system. No more losing sound when alt-tabbing out, you can browse servers while still in-game, the whole setup is just much more convenient. And it's only gonna get better as times goes on and they fix more of the problems.

Cheating has been forced underground by VAC lately, and remember that HL2 is a completely new engine made by the people who supported CS. I don't expect the script kiddies will have an easy time at all.

That's what I'm hoping as well. You can't underestimate the guys running the hacking community for the hl games though. What will most likely end up happening is the old catch-up game, where the hackers update their cheat programs, only to have VAC updates released soon after make them useless, only for the hackers to update their cheat programs, only to have VAC...etc.

the difference justindugard is that now, people who get caught cheating are banned for a year. From all VAC servers. That's a SERIOUS risk, so as more people get banned, the risks of cheating start looking less acceptable to most cheaters. There will always be a few people cheating, but it won't be as bad as previously.

I know this isnt on topic but its not randomly off topic crap.... Will i be able to buy HL2 from the shop and my OWN cd and my OWN cd-key on the box or will i have to use steam?

Oh, i get the question now :p but some one already answered below :p

:bounce:

You will have to use steam to play online. You can install from the CD however instead of having to download all the content.

it actually ate your CS key? :o

bet they havent heard this before @ valve

I thought cheaters had their cd keys banned permanently? I agree that it's definately a great step in putting a stop to the script kiddie cheaters as someone else rightly put it, but there's always the dedicated lamers who just use a keygen to get a new cd key. Like you said though it's most likely not gonna be anywhere near as bad with HL2 as it was in Counterstrike's peak days.

keygens dont work with steam. a keygen is simply a list of cd keys previously stolen/obtained. invariably they have all already been registered on steam
